Our camping trip is an extraordinary expedition that we offer only a few times a year. We go way beyond the frontier of settlement into wilderness areas where there are no houses and no people, just rainforest as wild and beautiful as it was before the first humans arrived on the continent of South America.
The first day we will travel in our boats up the Rio Negro and set up camp where we can swim and walk in the forest. At night we'll marvel at the uncountable stars in the heavens untainted by light from the city. The second day as we plunge deeper into the forest, the igarapé will get narrower and narrower and we will begin to navigate sharp “S” shaped curves as we weave into the hills of the primitive forest.
Day 1 Arriving in the Amazon we spend the first night in a hotel to be ready for an early start the next day.
Day 2 Early morning we pack the boats and embark on the Rio Negro, bound for a small tributary into the heart of the forest. We go as far as we can before sunset, set up our tents and enjoy the night sounds in the rainforest.
Day 3 Very early we'll scout in our canoes for birds or monkeys and then continue farther and deeper into the forest.
Day 4 Today we should reach the fall line where we shall camp near a splendid waterfall. We continue to hunt for plants and animals on foot and in our canoes.
Days 5-6 We are exploring! The plan for the next two days depends on what we've found and where we happen to be. But certainly the next days we will walk in the forest, explore along the river edges looking for animal tracks, listen, and observe some of the world’s most exotic birds and marvel at the fantastic creatures that inhabit the Amazon rainforest.
Day 7 Today we begin heading downstream and camp somewhere on the Rio Negro.
Day 8 We arrive near the nutrient rich Amazon River and we will observe a remarkably different environment. We will be near the Amazon River itself. In the evening we hunt for nocturnal animals like bulldog bats that feed on fish which they pluck from the water, and caiman, close relatives of crocodiles. There will also be a large collection of night birds to see in our spotlights.
Day 9 This morning very early we will explore Lago Janauari Ecological Park, a large park at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River. We will observe the bizarre wildlife of this wildlife rich area. We will visit the "Encontra das Aguas" the place where the Amazon River and the Rio Negro and observe the giant plumes of café au lait water and whirlpools as large as basketball courts spin along the dividing line between these two oceans of water.
In the late afternoon we return to Manaus transfer to the hotel and relax.
Day 10 Late morning transfer to the international airport for return flight.
