Day 1 Arrive in Salta, Argentina & Salta City Tour
Arrive today in Salta, a major city in the northwest of Argentina. Once your flight touches down at the Salta airport (SLA), a guide will greet you and then take you on a 3-hour Salta city tour. During the tour, climb the Cerro San Bernardo Hill to see the whole city from up above. Then visit the Belgrano Square and nearby important landmarks, such as the Cathedral, the Church of San Francisco, the Town Hall, and the Historic Museum of the North. There will also be time to shop at an arts and crafts market. Then check in to the 4* Hotel Design Suites Salta, located in the Belgrano Square.
Day 2 Cafayate Excursion
Today's itinerary includes a full day dedicated to the Cafayate region of northwestern Argentina, including its historical landmarks and its impressive vineyards. Cafayate is located 183 km south of Salta, and on the way there, stop to see several villages such as Cerrillos and La Merced. Also pass by the Las Conchas ravine and the Los Médanos, sand formations that are carved onto a mountainside. Next along the route is a stop at the Alemania settlement, where the last station of the Belgrano Railway runs. And then visit the Cuevas Pintadas de Guachipas, which cave paintings. Once Cafataye is close, the landscape changes from the arid Salta and JuJuy desert to lush, well-irrigated vineyards. In Cafayate, visit a winery for a tasting and tour. In the late afternoon, return to Salta by the same route.
Day 3 Humahuaca Excursion
Today's journey is another full day excursion outside of Salta, this time to the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The Humahuaca is a colorful ravine and mountain valley best marked by the Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Hill of Seven Colors. The town of Purmamarca lies at the foot of the Hill of Seven Colors and the nearby town of Tilcara has a pre-Colombian fortress, the Pucara, built by indigenous people centuries ago. Running through this region if the Río Grande, irrigating what would otherwise be a barren landscape. Return to Salta, or if you prefer, spend a night in Purmamarca or Tilcara.
Day 4 Depart from Salta
After breakfast at the hotel, a driver will pick you up and take you to the Salta airport for your flight home or to your next destination.
