Since the 1970s, the communities have been active in the preservation of the the lake and the surrounding forests. In 1990, the Reserve was created, allowing the ribierinhos a protected space to thrive..

Nature Trails & Lakes

Info

The Uakari Lodge has a vast network of nature trails spanning through the varzea forest. Covering flat terrain about 3 km in length each, these trails make for easy and informative walks. Each is designed to maximize the chance of sighting wildlife. During the flood season, from May to July, some of these trails can be traversed in paddle canoes. You may observe different species of monkeys, such as the red howler monkeys, uakaris, squirrel monkeys, and three-toed sloths. Guides will explain the different ecosystems, terrain, flora, and fauna found in the area..

The Mamirauá Reserve is located on the flood plains of the Rio Amazonas and the Rio Japurá. Nearly year-round, there is a complex mosaic of water bodies, channels, parana and lakes throughout the reserve. Paddle in canoes to explore the far reaches of these lakes and channels. You may encounter pink river dolphins, hoatzin, and maybe with the pirarucu fish. Catch a sunset while paddling back to the lodge, looking out for nighthawks, caiman, and other nocturnal animals as dusk settles over the Amazon.
