A short lesson on Buenos Aires' city geography
1) The "Microcentro"
The small part of Buenos Aires that often is also referred to as the Center or Down Town. Hotels in this area cater mainly to the Business Traveler, who needs to be close to the offices and banks in this area. You also find in this area the still famous Florida street, a good place to find everything from cheap leather clothes to fake CDs. Galeria Pacifico has reopened, but without the Harrod's the street never came back to ity's old glory. The Microcentro still is a good place to be: All Metro lines radiate from here and bring you to almost everywhere you wanted to go in Buenos Aires. At the edge of it you find the Casa Rosada.
2) San Telmo
Famous for it's Antiques markets and the Tango performances. A quiet area next to the Microcentro. Not much traffic, pedestrian and sidewlalk coffee friendly, a lot of popular bars and restaurants with a bohemian flair.
3) Puerto Madero
The New Buenos Aires built up around the old docklands; modern and chic. Excellent Restaurants with open air seating along the yacht marinas. Most big and famous international hotel chains have a franchise here. Like san Telmo also next to the Microcentro.
4) The Theater District
The name says it all. Lively at night; all you need for your entertainment. Across the famous 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest Avenue of the worlkd, from the Microcentro.
5) Abasto
The old market area of Buenos Aires. Today better known for it's Abasto Mall shopping center and it's quiet side streets. Excellent Metro connections to all parts of Buenos Aires.
6) Recoleta
THE elegant part of town!
Here are the best hotels, the best restaurants and of course the best shops, especially fashion shops. Arquitechture resembles Paris. The shops look like they were in Milan. This area of Buenos Aires is quintessentially Argentine as it brings together the best and the most elegant what Europe hast to offer in South America.
