At once challenging and thrilling, the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a trek you'll never forget. Winding past fertile river valleys, ancient Inca ruins, steep terraces, and vertiginious Andes slopes, the Inca Trail takes you deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, from where the Inca Empire ruled during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Inca Road system was highly developed and was one of the keys to the Inca's success in managing an expansive empire. You'll experience what it was like to walk in the footsteps of the Inca on this 4 day, 3 night Inca Trail tour, starting in the heart of the Sacred Valley, and finishing at the spectacular city in the sky called Machu Picchu.
Thousands of trekkers make the climb along the Inca Trail each year, because it is one of the most breathtaking ways to experience Machu Picchu: only trekkers along the Inca Trail can enter Machu Picchu through Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. On clear mornings, the view of the citadel from the Sun Gate is simply stunning.
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is 43km (26.7miles) of stone-paved trail (much of it still original construction by the Incas), and reaches altitudes of 4200m (13,800ft) above sea level. On your Inca Trail tour, you'll have an English-speaking guide, cooks, porters, and trekking staff who will carry much of the trail equipment, such as tents and cooking utensils. Along the way, you'll be able to explore Inca ruins such as Wiñay Wayna and Phuyupatamarca, pass through different ecological zones such as the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon cloud forest, and see orchids, brightly-colored birds and butterflies, and dream-like landscapes on this hiker's paradise.
