Friday: PUERTO MALDONADO - POSADA AMAZONAS
Upon arrival in the Puerto Maldonado airport, you'll be greeted and transferred to the Tambopata River Port for your trip down the river to your Amazon Jungle Lodge. Puerto Maldonado is a bustling Amazon city situated at the convergence of the mighty Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers. Its principal activities are gold mining, Brazil nut collecting, timber extraction, agriculture and ecotourism.
Depart on the 2 hour boat trip by motorized canoe down the Tambopata River to Posada Amazonas. Depending on the arrival time, you may have a boxed lunch aboard the boats or have lunch upon arrival at Posada Amazonas. During your riverboat voyage, you may see tropical bird species edge such as Black Skimmer, Pied Lapwing, Capped Heron, Jabiru Stork, Roadside Hawk, and several species of kingfishers, swallows and flycatchers. Upon arrival at Posada Amazonas, you are free to unpack and unwind in this relaxing and tranquil Amazon Jungle Lodge. Posada Amazonas is a comfortable 24 room lodge owned jointly by Rainforest Expeditions and the Local Community of Infierno.
In the afternoon, you'll receive a short orientation on this Amazon lodge and its Ecotourism Project, as well as the schedule of events and activities available to you during your stay. Then enjoy exciting jungle activities like a trip along the rainforest ceiling in the Canopy Tower. This 35 meter tall tower allows you to ascend to platforms at the top of the rainforest canopy so that you can see over the treetops. It's an excellent spot for bird watching and taking in the incredible Amazon jungle views. After dinner in the lodge, you'll get to watch an informative video about the Tambopata Rainforest.
Saturday: POSADA AMAZONAS
Rise at dawn for an early breakfast and a visit to the Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake. Travel by boat from Posadas Amazonas to a trail down river, and after a short hike, you'll arrive at the beautiful oxbow lake full of giant river otters, turtles, hoatzin birds, and marsh birds. Enjoy a leisurely canoe ride through the lake to see the wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Then return to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest before embarking on the afternoon outing. Visit the Infierno Community Ethnobotanical Center, where locals pack, distribute, and sell medicinal plants gathered in the jungle. Then return to Posada Amazonas for dinner and relaxation. Enjoy a tropical drink during happy hour, and opt for a night hike to look for amphibians and insects before retiring for the night.
Sunday: POSADA AMAZONAS
After an early breakfast, you will visit a parrot clay lick. Dozens and sometimes hundreds of red and green macaws, large parrots, yellow-crowned Amazons, and more congregate here to ingest clay, which is nutricious for them. This congregation creates a riotous and colorful wildlife spectacle where the greens, oranges, reds and blues of the parrots dance around the bank. At times, this spectacle lasts for hours.
Then visit a small parakeet clay lick to see Blue Headed Parrots, Orange-Cheeked Parrots, Cobalt-winged parakeets, and sometimes even the rare Rock Parakeet.
After lunch, you'll enjoy a walk through a primary forest trail with a community member and our naturalist guide who will explain general aspects of rain forest ecology and natural history. Return to Posada Amazonas and enjoy happy hour and a relaxing nap on a hammock.
Monday: POSADA AMAZONAS-PUERTO MALDONADO
After an early breakfast, you will return to Puerto Maldonado for your flight back to Lima. From there you can catch your return flight home, or continue on another tour through South America...
