Day 1 - Arrival in Buenos Aires & City Tour
Welcome to Argentina! One of our travel guides will greet you at the Buenos Aires International Airport and take you to your hotel in downtown Buenos Aires. Check in and relax in your hotel room in the 4 star Hotel Broadway All Suites. In the afternoon, you'll head out on a walking tour of Buenos Aires. This guided, half day tour includes many important landmarks of the city, including the Museo Nacional Ferroviario (the National Railway Museum). Note: the Museum is closed on Mondays.
After breakfast in your Buenos Aires hotel, your tour guide will escort you to the domestic Buenos Aires airport for your flight to Salta, in northwest Argentina. Once in Salta, a tour guide will greet you and take you on a 3 hour Salta city tour. Climb the Cerro San Bernardo hill via a cable car ride to see panoramic views of the city. Then visit the beautiful Salta Cathedral, the 18th-century Cabildo, the Plaza 9 de Julio, the Church of San Francisco, the Town Hall, the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (Archaeology Museum of the High Mountains), and the local handicrafts market. Check into your 4 star Salta Hotel Almeria for the evening.
Day 3 - Salta Train to the Clouds Tour
Enjoy an early breakfast in your Salta hotel, and then transfer to the Train to the Clouds Station from the General Belgrano Station in Salta. This spectacular 15 hour train ride and tour on the Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) whisks you through the Cordillera de los Andes, past 19 tunnels, 29 bridges, many ravines and breathtaking scenery.
Once constructed as a shipping route for goods brought from the Chilean coast, the Train to the Clouds Salta route criss-crosses through the Cordillera de los Andes at a height of 4,220 metres (13,850 ft), making it one of the tallest trains in the world. One of the most interesting aspect of the Train to the Clouds, which was developed by the American engineer Richard Maury in the early 20th century, is that the train doesn't use brakes. Instead, this railway uses the winding, zigzag route through the mountains to control speed.
You'll have lunch along the way, and will have the opportunity to stop at San Antonio de los Cobres to see this Andean town. Return to Salta late at night.
Day 4 - Salta to Tucuman to Buenos Aires
Have breakfast in your Salta hotel, and then depart for the Tucumán train station. Passing through the colorful landscape of Cafayate via a private transfer, you can enjoy the distinctive Northwest Argentina scenery, and you can also opt to visit the Tafi Valley and the Quilmes Ruins. Once in Tucuman, you'll take the Ferrocentral train to Buenos Aires, a 25 hour journey. This popular scenic route is often booked well in advance, and there is a dining and snack car on board. If you wish, you can opt to spend more time in Tucuman, taking a city tour of this historic city, before returning to Buenos Aires.
Day 5 - Arrival in Buenos Aires
In the afternoon, a guide will greet you at the Retiro station and transfer you to your Buenos Aires hotel. Get some sleep and relax before enjoying an evening at your leisure in Buenos Aires.
Day 6 - Tour to Lujan & Train
This morning, eat breakfast in your Buenos Aires hotel, and then enjoy a full day tour to Lujan by railway. Lujan is a small city located just a short distance inland from Buenos Aires. In Lujan, visit the Basilica of the Virgin and the Enrique Udaondo Transportation Museum. Every year, pilgrims come to the Basilica in Lujan to pay homage to the patron saint of Argentina. The museum contains everything from horse carriages to planes, bikes, boats, and of course, trains -- all salvaged from Argentina's history. Lunch is included in this tour. Return to Buenos Aires in the evening.
Day 7 - Free Day in Buenos Aires & Tango Show
Have breakfast in hotel and enjoy a free day in Buenos Aires at your leisure. You may want to opt for a boat ride along the Parana River Delta to the charming neighborhood of El Tigre. In the evening, enjoy a tango dance show and dinner at one of the famous Buenos Aires tango clubs, La Ventana, in the barrio of San Telmo. Learn about the history and evolution of the tango, enjoy music from the Gran Orquesta de Juan D' Arienzo, dance performances by professional tango dancers, and several artists who will dazzle you throughout the evening. A delicious 3-course meal, paired with authentic Argentine wine, is included. Return to your hotel in the late evening.
Day 8 - Departure from Buenos Aires
Breakfast in your hotel, and transfer to the airport for your flight home or to your next Argentina travel destination.
