Easter Island Chile Moais Structures

Arrival in Easter Island

Day 1

Arrive at Mataveri Airport, where your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Spend the day exploring the island and getting familiarised with the ancient Rapa Nui culture and its intriguing history.
Located in the midst of the Pacific Ocean, 3800 kms (approx. 2375 miles) off the coast of mainland Chile, Easter Island boasts volcanoes, Polynesian art, mysterious moai statues, and great snorkeling and surfing. Get accustomed to the atmosphere of friendly Polynesian hospitality and stroll along the streets of this seaside town.

Raraku Moais Statues in Easter Island

Anakena

Day 2

Departure from the hotel in Hanga Roa, tour across the Moai route. These colossal sculptures carved in volcanic rock are scattered all around the island. Visit to the 'Ahu' or ceremonial platforms, starting with Ahu Vaihu, surrounded by Moais that lay face down on the ground, it is a semi destroyed temple: the islanders destroyed its eight large statues in times gone by.
Then visit to Ahu Akahanga. This Ahu or platform measures 81 ms / 265.75 ft in length and 3.25 ms / 10.50 ft wide. Its historical importance is that it was the burial place of King Hotu Matu'a, the first king of the island. The platform is decorated with red stones throughout its length and with petroglyphs that have been eroded by time, but are still visible.
The tour continues to the Rano Raraku Volcano, located near the southern coast and at the feet of Poike. The Rano Raraku volcano is made up of gray-ochre volcanic tufa, and stands at 100 ms / 328 ft above sea level. It has an oval shape and on its peak lays a crater with a lake that is 50 ms deep. It is one of the island's major and most valuable archaeological sites. It has an open quarry that was used for carving the Moai. There are over 400 monuments that were in the process of being carved spread throughout its interior and exterior slopes to various degrees of complexion. Several differences may be observed among them such as, for example, TUKUTURI, the kneeling Moai. Another Moai stands out because of the three-masted sailboat carved on his its chest.
Later, departure to Ahu Tongariki, the largest Moai platform on the island. It is made up of 15 Moais. The place was destroyed in May 1960 by a tsunami, and it has been restored mainly thanks to Japanese foundations. Next, arrive at the Ahu Te Pito Kura, where there is an enormous spherical rock and the Moai Paro, the largest statue on the island.
Later in the afternoon, come to Anakena, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Located in the north with clean and warm turquoise waters, Anakena is the island's main beach. For many years, its coral sand beds and great luminosity were for the exclusive use of important people and governors. The Polynesian expeditions belonging to the Airiki Hotu Matu'a, the island's first king, disembarked at Anakena some 1,500 years ago. A box lunch is included in the tour. Return to the hotel in Hanga Roa.

Easter Island Birdman Islet

Orongo & Birdman Ceremony

Day 3

Today, visi the ceremonial village of Orongo, from where you can see the islets of Motu Nui, Motu Iti, and Motu Kao Kao. After the arrival of the Europeans, the Rapa Nui people took part in a Birdman or Tangata Manu Cult competition each year, where the first man to retrieve a bird's egg from one of the islets - without breaking it - and scaled the cliffs to Orongo was named the Birdman of the year. Continue on to Ahu Vinapu, an altar of 2 tons of basalt. Finish with a stop at the cave dwelling of Ana Kai Tangata, where there are carvings and drawings representing the Birdman cult. Then return to the hotel, and spend the rest of the day as you wish.
