Flying to the Amazon

Amazon Flight Info

Getting to the Amazon Rainforest can be tricky. The best way to get to the Amazon is by flying into Brazil. Brazil is home to the majority of the Amazon Rainforest, and the main hub for rainforest activities is Manaus, Brazil (MAO). There are direct flights from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Miami. It is common to fly into Rio de Janeiro and then take a domestic flight to the city of Manaus. For more information on flights to Brazil, visit our Brazil information page.

You can also get to the Amazon by flying into Peru. Even though Brazil occupies a larger portion of the Amazon Rainforest, don’t forget that the Amazon River actually starts in the Peruvian Andes. If you would rather fly into Peru, the main airports to the Peruvian rainforest are Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos, and Manu. There are direct flights to Iquitos from Lima and Panama City. There are direct flights to Puerto Maldonado and Manu from Cusco and Lima. For more information on flights to Peru, visit our Peru information page.

Another option is flying into Colombia. Believe it or not, Colombia contains a rather large slice of the Amazon Rainforest. It is common to fly into Bogotá and take a domestic flight to Leticia. From Leticia, hop into a riverboat and travel downriver to the mighty Amazon. Your eco-lodge or cozy river bungalow will be waiting for your arrival, and after all that extensive traveling I’m sure you’ll be ready for it too.

It’s important to schedule your flights well in advance. Once you have your flights secured, you can focus on all the exciting activities that await you! Flight delays and cancellations can occur, so you may want to schedule your trip with some buffer days. You can also purchase travel insurance that would cover trip cancellation for any reason and/or trip delays.
