The 25 Reserves that make up this stunning UNESCO world heritage site are home to one of the world's richest and most endangered habitats. This complex and unique ecosystem boasts 450 tree species per hectare which proves to be even more diverse than that of the Amazon. The fauna and flora species numbers here are also exceptionally high and incredibly varied. From jaguars to howler monkeys to harpy eagles, this lush, mountainous region along Brazil's southern coast will astound any visitor.
Not only are the flora, fauna and geography astounding but the train as well. Take the Serra do Mar train through this paradise and you won't be disappointed. This is must-do side trip for all.
There are several tours that you can do while in the Atlantic Rainforest and Curitiba in southern Brazil. The essential tour to do is the full-day tour of Curitiba, Morretes, and Antonina in the Serra do Mar region. First, enjoy a morning tour of Curitiba, passing Tiradentes Square, the Guaira Theater, and the Museum of Oscar Niemeyer. Stop to visit the Wire Opera House, Tangua Park, Tingui Park and the Botanical Garden. Also visit Antonina, a lovely and historic port town. Then transfer to Morretes, stopping there for a delicious lunch by the river, and free time to explore this quiet colonial town. The lunch (included) is a typical barreado, with slow-boiled beef and seafood. Return to Curitiba via a tourist class 3-hour train ride through the Serra do Mar. The route was built in the late 19th century, and crosses through lush rainforest, mountains, and bridges. The Curitiba by Night Tour includes a dinner at the Velho Madalosso restaurant in the Santa Felicidade neighborhood, which features authentic Italian cuisine, as well as a nighttime city tour. Other excursions go to Ilha do Mel, Vila Velha and Furnas, and Guartela.Show Less There are several tours that you can do while in the Atlantic Rainforest and Curitiba in southern Brazil.
