Olinda lies in the center of Olinda, a state of Pernambuco five miles outside of Recife. It's 17th and 18th-century era buildings, cobblestone streets, belvederes, artists studios, and colonial charm have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the Portuguese again, today Olinda is one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial cities. Olinda is actually host to one of Brazil's most vivacious Carnival celebrations outside of Rio de Janeiro. Unlike in Rio and Salvador, Carnival in Olinda is free and very popular.
Visit the magnificent churches, enjoy the nearby beaches and make the effort to go for Carnival!
