8 Days / 7 Nights
- Salvador - Africa in the New World
- Maceió - The friendly beach capital
- Olinda and Recife - Dutch Influence in the 'Venice of the Northeast' and Colonial trading posts
Olinda lies within the state of Pernambuco, which is five miles outside of Recife. It's 17th and 18th-century era buildings, cobblestone streets, belvederes, artists studios, and colonial charm have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the Portuguese again, today Olinda is one of Brazil's best-preserved colonial cities. Olinda is actually the host of one of Brazil's most vivacious Carnival celebrations outside of Rio de Janeiro. We recommend joining in on the party, unlike Unlike in Rio and Salvador, Carnival in Olinda is free and centered around folk traditions.

Set next to blue waters of the Atlantic, Olinda features several historic buildings preserved in Olinda, including the oldest church, the Church of São João. There are also several museums and art galleries. Walk down the Rua do Amparo, past restaurants, museums, hotels and art studios, and enjoy a serenade of live music on weekends. There are also forró and maracatú clubs with traditional music. We recommend taking a catamaran tour of the neighboring city of Recife's coastline. After the cruise, visit an atelier in Olinda, which has a collection of pottery and other art work. If you are interested in relaxing on the beach, take a full-day guided tour of Pernambuco's most beautiful beaches, including Igarrasu and Itamaraca. Explore the Peixe Boi Eco Park, a rescued manatee shelter. You can see the manatees close up, and buy gifts at the shop to help fund the shelter. Then cross over to the Coroa do Aviao Island. You may want to go swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, or take a boat ride through these calm, warm waters.
