Top 5 Pantanal Tours

In the center of the South American Continent, south of the Amazon basin and east of the Andes lies our planets most spectacular wetland system, the Pantanal. It is often referred to as the worlds largest freshwater wetland system. A tour through the Pantanal is a paradise containing hundreds of species of birds, varieties of butterflies, brightly colored flowers and abundant amounts of fish. The endangered jaguar and the rare hyacinth macaws and giant river otters make this area their home.

Many travelers think the Amazon Rainforest is the best place to spot rare fauna and flora. However, it is actually the Pantanal Wetlands that offer the best wildlife spotting opportunities when taking a tour of Brazil. With the careful preservation of the wetlands, Pantanal Brazil tours provide the best chances of spotting a Pantanal jaguar, colorful birds, and giant anteaters, as its foliage is far less dense than the Amazon’s.

Pantanal Brazil Conservation Area, a Birdwatcher’s Paradise

The vast Brazil Pantanal conservation region in southern and eastern Brazil is home to a variety of birds, mammals, fish, and other wildlife. Prepare to spot caiman in the water, capybara roaming the terrain, and giant river otters playing. On your trip to Brazil, relax in a cozy Pantanal lodge, snorkel in Nobres, explore the wetlands on a horseback riding adventure, and learn how to fish for piranha! All of our fully-custom Pantanal trips are sure to give travelers the ultimate nature and wildlife experience.

There are so many species of birds and animals that you might see while on a Pantanal tour. Depending on the season and the area of the Pantanal where you explore, you’ll see different animals. But you’re almost guaranteed to see caiman, which number about 10 million in the region. Capybara, the world’s largest rodent, are also very common. Animals like the giant river otter, the piranha, and even jaguars are possible to spot here. If you’re interested in spotting jaguars, we can arrange lodging and guided tours that are dedicated to spotting jaguars. We recommend visiting between June and November for the best chances. Most Pantanal tours are arranged along with lodging at a jungle lodge, so we can book all services, including the guides, tours, meals, lodging, and transportation. The best way to access the Pantanal is by flying into the city of Cuiaba or Campo Grande.

Pantanal Travel FAQ’s

Thinking about a Pantanal trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests.

When should I go to Pantanal Brazil?

April to November is the best time to visit the Pantanal. This is the driest time of year, especially between June and September. Drier weather means that animals congregate around water supplies making sightings easier and biting insects are less present in these months. That said, it is possible to visit most Pantanal lodges year round and if you are interested in seeing the plains flooded and full of water then December to March are months worth considering.

How do I get to the Pantanal?

There are two main regions to visit in the Brazilian Pantanal – the north and south Pantanal. To reach the north Pantanal, you’ll need to travel to Cuiaba. To visit the south Pantanal, you’ll need to get to Campo Grande. There are flights from both cities to Sao Paulo and some other cities within Brazil, with plenty of connections to Rio de Janeiro and other popular destinations to visit in Brazil. From either Cuiaba or Campo Grande most Pantanal trips involve staying in a lodge which is typically about 2 to 4 hours away by road from the cities. Once at a lodge you’ll have tours included each day which can involve 4×4 trips in search of wildlife, canoeing, horse-riding and walks.

What should I bring to the Pantanal?

A good pair of binoculars is very useful, so is a camera with a telephoto lens if you want to get some good wildlife shots. Sunglasses and sun cream are useful. Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing is essential and so is an insect repellent. Some sturdy footwear for use during tours is needed plus lightweight footwear for use in your lodge. On game drives at night it can get a little chilly, so a light jacket is useful too.

Where should I stay in the Pantanal?

Take a look at our two favorite Pantanal lodges – the Pousada Rio Mutum and Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge. Pousada Rio Mutum: Pousada do Rio Mutum is in the municipality of Barão de Melgaço, one of the most beautiful regions of the Pantanal. The landscape surrounding the lodge features hills, savannas, rivers, and flooded areas. The Pousada is also nearby the famous Bays of Siá Mariana and Chacororé. Guests can choose from three different types of rooms, as well as daily exciting wildlife and adventure excursions.

Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge: The Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge is a self-sustainable lodge in the Pantanal. While staying here, go on birdwatching tours, walk on the trails of the primary forest, practice canoeing, or explore fields and forests on horseback. At night, opt for a safari where you can spot wildlife at the night alongside expert naturalist guides. This lodge features a variety of apartments suitable for solo travelers, romantic couples, or small families.

Where can I see jaguars in Brazil?

The Pantanal is the best place to see jaguars in Brazil. With luck, you see jaguars at one of the many Pantanal lodges and will definitely see lots of other wildlife. If you are especially keen to jaguars some lodges offer special trips which significantly increase your chances of seeing these impressive beasts. Additionally, Porto Jofre is a river town in the northern Pantanal where there are boat trips with high chances of jaguar sightings.
