Top Things to Do at Lake Titicaca

#1: Uros Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca:

lake titicaca travel guide
These are manmade islands built by the local peoples by stacking piles of reeds on top of one another until they have a floating platform.  The Uros peoples live their lives on these islands, they have constructed homes, churches, schools and even reed boats that they use to travel from island to island.  It is an awesome adventure to see how the Uros live their daily lives floating on Lake Titicaca.

#2: Taquile Island:

lake titicaca travel guide
Taquile Island is often combined with a visit to the Uros Floating Islands and is a large land mass located on the lake, inhabited by the Taquileans.  This culture is different than the Uros and they have a different history and language, although both groups live on the lake.  The island itself is beautiful as it has terraced agriculture and overlooks the massive blue lake. No Lake Titicaca Travel Guide would be complete without information on Taquile Island.

Amantani Island is another small island where locals use their homes as a source of income and welcome tourists to participate in homestays, usually of 2 days / 1 night.  They will show you how they live their daily lives, cook for you, and even put on shows for tourists, showing their traditional clothes and dancing.

#4: Sillustani Ruins:

The Sillustani Ruins are a must in any Lake Titicaca Travel Guide. While not located on the lake itself, Sillustani Ruins are near the lake and can be easily visited en route to Juliaca airport.  The ruins are funerary towers built by pre-Incan cultures, constructed by large blocks of stone.  Visiting the Sillustani Ruins adds a variety to the mix of tours offered in this area of Peru.

#5: Kayaking Lake Titicaca:

For those seeking a more active vacation, kayaking on the lake is a real joy!  Kayak near the Uros Islands, the Taquile Islands, and experience Lake Titicaca in a different way.  If you’re lucky, you’ll see some of the native wildlife of Lake Titicaca. No Lake Titicaca Travel Guide would be complete with kayaking on the lake!

Overall, Lake Titicaca is a large lake and there are plenty of things to see, so be sure to add it to your Peru itinerary for a glimpse into the Altiplano area of Peru, and on to Bolivia or Colca Canyon!
