Cuzco Plaza de Armas Cusco It hasn’t been easy for JW Marriott’s architects to bring the Marriott’s newest luxury hotel in Peru from dream to reality. Built on colonial foundations in the heart of Cuzco’s historic district, the hotel had to be carefully, if not meticulously, excavated. Getting their hands dirty, Marriott’s construction workers have excavated the ground by hand, and under the direct supervision of archeologists, to make sure they didn’t disturb anything of historical significance. Progress has been slower than anticipated, and costs have soared millions over budget, but the Marriott owners claim that the JW Marriott Cuzco Peru hotel will open on schedule. So plan on traveling to Cuzco, Peru, in style next year: the grand opening of JW Marriott in 2012 was recently confirmed. The JW Marriott Peru hotel owners already have built a destination hotel in Lima, Peru, a glittering beacon of a skyscraper perched on the cliff above Larcomar in the posh Miraflores district of Peru’s capital. The owners are eager to open a new hotel in Cuzco, once the capital of the Inca Empire, and now the hotbed for travelers to the archeological wonder of Machu Picchu. The Marriott will move into downtown Cuzco, where the 5 Star luxury hotel will compete with other 5 Star destination hotels in the area, such as Inkaterra’s La Casona and the classic El Monasterio hotel. The newest Marriott will boast 153 guest rooms, colonial foundations, ancient artifacts as decor, and plenty of amenities to make travelers’ stays in the high-elevation city of Cuzco as pleasurable as possible — such as supplemental oxygen systems in all guest rooms. The hotel grounds also feature a full restaurant and spa. This luxury Peru hotel opening marks one of the several moves the Marriott hotel chain is making in the Latin America market. A recent South America hotel opening in Panama is the Marriott’s third in the country. Marriott Hotels was also recently named among the top hotels in the “Best of Business Travel Latin America” in 2011 by Latin Trade magazine. Best performing hotels included their hotels in Lima, Bogota, Caracas, and Quito.
