northern peru toursIf you’re located in the Seattle area, we highly recommend checking out the upcoming exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum, titled, “Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon.” Hundreds of archaeological treasures from northern Peru will be on exhibit from October 17, 2013 – January 5, 2014. Bonus! We will be raffling off free tickets to the SAM’s Peru art exhibit at our upcoming Peru travel seminar, to be held in Edmonds WA on September 21st. Read more details about the seminar. The Seattle Art Museum considers this show a real treat: the SAM is the only US venue where these pre-Colombian artifacts will be displayed, and some have never been showcased outside of Peru. Artifacts from the Mochica, Chimu, Lambayeque, and Inca cultures will be present. Gold Jewel of SipanOne of the iconic pieces of the exhibit is a pre-Colombian gold mask from the Royal Tomb of Sipan (see image to left). The piece is called, “Ornament in the shape of a human head,” and dates back to 100-800 A.D. It is made of gold, silver, and lapis lazuli. The Royal Tomb of Sipan is located in Lambayeque, in northern Peru. The fact that the ornament is decorated with lapis lazuli, which is found only in Chile, shows that the region had extensive trade networks during this period. Another fascinating golden mask, also from the Mochica people and dating back to 100-800 AD, is made of flattened gold, with tentacles spanning out from the face, and decorated with chrysocolla and shells (see image at top of article). It is normally housed in the Museo de la Nación, Lima. Also on exhibit are colonial-era and 20th-century Peruvian art pieces, including sculpture, metalwork, painting, pottery, gold and silver ornaments, photography, and textiles. The exhibit is an amalgamation of private and public collections from Peru, Canada, France, Germany, and the United States. During the the time when Peru was a viceroyalty of the Spanish crown, and leading up to the present day, the Spanish artistic tradition with indigenous traditions created a unique blend of artistic styles. The Cusqueño school of art is perhaps the most famous example of this creative clash of cultures. Colonial-era artists from the Cusco region painted Christian religious scenes that also embedded local folklore  – such as a guinea pig (a local delicacy) at the Last Supper table. Plan your visit to the SAM to see “Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon.” Read more in-depth about the exhibit & Peruvian art.
