Petrified wood in Argentina

Drive from Bariloche to Los Antiguos

Day 1

Depart from San Carlos de Bariloche (Río Negro Province) to begin your journey throughout Route 40, one of the longest routes in Argentina, expanding from the North to the South of the country across the Andes Mountain Chain.
On the road, take in views of El Bolsón, a pictouresque towns in the middle of the Andes, and Esquel, with its Welsh culture inherited by the settlers that arrived in Chubut Province during the late 19th century. Descend to visit the old steam-locomotive 'La Trochita' and the Alerces National Park, with its array of Patagonian trees, including the cypresses, one of the tallests trees in the world. Continue towards Cholila, one of the places where the famous American robbers Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, stayed during their exile.
Arrive at Hosteria Los Antiguos. Spend the night at this comfortable lodge located on the shores of Buenos Aires Lake, next to the Chilean Border.

Cueva de las Manos Excursion

Day 2

Today, visit Patagonia’s most important archaeological site: Cueva de las Manos!
The journey starts driving across Route 40, passing through the Caracoles Canyon until arriving at the Visitors Center located in the Pinturas River Canyon. Here is where the trek begins, following the path made by the Tehuelches, who inhabitants this area more than 10,000 years ago and are the authors of the rock paintings you're about to see. Learn about the theories surrounding the meanings of the animal symbols and the hands drawn on the walls, and the techniques used to create them. Depending on the group preferences, a trek around the Pintura River Canyon will take place, to try to grasp a better understanding of what having lived surrounded by such an impressive landscape would have felt like.
Finish the trip at the Visitors Center and return to Hosteria Los Antiguos.

Box lunch is included. Entrance fee is to be paid directly on the spot, in local currency.

Marble Caves in Chile Frontier

Marble Caves Excursion

Day 3

Today, transfer to the west to visit the Marble Cave, the Marble Chapel, the Marble Cathedral. Located in one of the five biggest lakes in South America divided by the frontier between Argentina and Chile, these mesmerizing formations are the result of the erosion exerted by the lake on the stone. The beauty of its grey-blue islets is reflected in the deep light blue lake, and its colors vary depending on the weather conditions and the season, which makes every visit a unique experience.
The trip will be done by land, approaching the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, and by water, crossing the Andes. Observe the changes in the vegetation as you go from the forest to the lake, and keep an eye open to spot the majestic wings of the Andean condors as they fly across the sky.
Transfer back to Hosteria Los Antiguos to relax and spend the night.

El Chalten Mount Fitz Roy
