Machu Picchu Travel FAQ’s

Thinking about a Machu Picchu trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Machu Picchu Vacation Planning page for in-depth Machu Picchu travel tips.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

Wondering when the best time to visit Machu Picchu is? It is accessible year-round. The Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance, but the ruins themselves are still open and can be reached by train. Machu Picchu has two distinct seasons: the wet season from November to March and the dry season from April to November. During the dry season, the skies are clear and temperatures are cooler, particularly at night. This is also considered the busy season, with an influx of visitors from June to August. The wet season is during the summer in Peru. In addition to increased rain, travelers can expect higher temperatures and fewer tourists crowds at the famed site and Cusco.

Is it safe to travel to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is a very safe place to travel to! You can get there only by train or by trekking. Should you take the Inca trail, make sure you are well prepared. It can be dangerous to your health should you not give your body enough time to acclimatize to the high altitude. While Machu Picchu and the train line to get there are far down in the valley are no danger to your health. The trek takes over several passes high up in the mountains. All of our tours of Machu Picchu offer the option for a private local guide, to make sure travelers feel safe while touring the ruins.

Can you visit Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can tour Machu Picchu in a day from Cuzco or from the Sacred Valley. But that would be very rushed. We recommend that you stay overnight down below the ruins and consider coming back the following morning to see more.

What is the best way to visit Machu Picchu?

The best way to visit Machu Picchu depends on you! If you like hiking, trekking, you might want to hike there – and maybe take the train back. Or you just take the train, which has several different levels of comfort starting from the Expedition train, then the Vistadome with large windows for great views and the luxurious Hiram Bingham train.
