Colombia Travel FAQs

Thinking about a Colombia trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Colombia Vacation Planning page for in-depth Colombia travel tips.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

Thanks to its geographic location on the equator, Colombia experiences consistent average temperatures throughout the year. Still, we recommend the months between December and March as the best time to visit Colombia. During this time, the weather remains nice and dry. Most notably, this is a fantastic time to experience the vibrant culture of Colombia. It is during these months that Carnaval and Semana Santa take place. While an exciting and comfortable time to visit, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and competitive prices. June and August are good months to visit and quite dry months.

Colombia is a large and diverse country, so while the recommended seasons above are applicable toward certain travelers, every individual should determine their interests and needs for their trip. Depending on what you want to see and do, the off-season may suit your goals. For a detailed list of the pros and cons of each season, check out our comprehensive page on Colombia’s weather conditions and seasons.

Is Colombia safe for travel?

Colombia is safe for tourists to travel to Colombia! Colombia’s reputation as being unsafe is a thing of the past and safety is now comparable to or better than other South American countries. The only exceptions are a few very remote areas that tourists are unlikely to wish to visit and to which we do not arrange tours. On a private Colombia tour with SouthAmerica.travel, travelers will be shown the best (including the safest!) areas of Colombia by local, professional guides. Arranging a private tour ensures better safety and quality of your trip.

What are the best activities to do in Colombia?

Travelers are drawn to Colombia for is known for its pristine, white-sand beaches. Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park are ideal for those looking for a refreshing swim and a glowing tan. If an adventure of diving is more up your alley, consider Providencia and San Andres Island. For a taste of history, visit some of Colombia’s archaeological sites such as San Agustin, Tierradentro, and Ciudad Perdida (lost city). For world renowned street art, head to Bogota. And of course, those looking for some internationally recognized espresso should embark on a Colombia Coffee tour in Colombia’s coffee region. Additionally, the Amazon is a great spot to spot dolphins as well as Barichara and Villa de Leyva for the experience of a colonial town.

West of Bogota, the coffee triangle in Colombia consists of three cities: Pereira, Armenia, and Manizales. This internationally recognized area in Colombia covers approximately 1.2% of the nation’s territory. One of the best areas of the coffee region in Colombia is the Cocora Valley. Think green rolling hills sprinkled with some of the world’s tallest palm trees. Embark on a hike or a horseback ride here and gain great photo opportunities with views of verdant mountains and local wildlife. Visit the National Coffee Park, located in the Quindio area for a visit to an interactive museum, a cable car ride, and ecological trail hiking opportunities. With so much to see and do, the coffee region in Colombia is a place that people write home about. There is a lot of coffee farms you can visit to taste coffee and see how the coffee production process looks like.

How long should I travel in Colombia?

Ideally, if time permits, travelers should spend at least 2 weeks in Colombia if you want to see Cartagena, Bogota, Tayrona National Park, Medellin, and the coffee region. The more time you have, the more you can understand and get a feel for each unique section of Colombia.

What vaccinations do I need for Colombia?

It’s important to discuss required vaccinations for travel to Colombia with your primary doctor or local travel clinic so that you stay safe in Colombia. You can also search the World Health Association site for questions regarding malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever which can be found in certain regions of Colombia.
