Day 1

Arrival in Rio de Janeiro

First stop, Rio de Janeiro, the city perhaps most famous in Brazil for its beaches, forests, granite peaks, friendly people, and the Carnival celebration that takes place here every year. At the airport, your guide will pick you up and take you to your beachfront hotel on Copacabana. Relax, sink your toes in the sand, go shopping, or swim in the rooftop pool.

Tonight's dinner is a Brazilian rodizio, an All-You-Can-Eat barbecue. Also try a caipirinha, the national cocktail of Brazil.

Day 2

Sugarloaf Mountain Tour

Take a cable car ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak that looks over Guanabara Bay. Enjoy panoramic views of the city, bay, beaches, and forests that make Rio de Janeiro one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The tour continues with a visit to some important historical sites in Rio, where you'll learn about how the prince of Portugal, Dom Pedro, declared himself Emperor of Brazil and declared independence from Portugal - a critical milestone in Brazilian history. In the afternoon, you may want to relax, stroll along the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, or go on an optional Rio city tour.

Day 3

Corcovado Mountain Tour & Arrival in Paraty

After breakfast, your guide will take you to another important hill in Rio de Janeiro: the Corcovado Mountain. At its summit stands theChrist the Redeemer Statue, welcoming all into the city.

In the afternoon, you'll ride along the coast to Paraty, a port city and a Brazilian National Treasure that is significant for its role in the Brazilian Gold Rush. The Route of Gold portion of the tour begins! Check into your pousada, and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, included in your tour.

Day 4

Paraty Schooner Cruise

Paraty was the port where gold from Minas Gerais was loaded and shipped to Europe. Today, its tranquil streets feature colorful colonial-era mansions, well-kept pousadas, and lively cafes. Take a walk through the cobblestone streets, and then board the schooner for a half-day cruise - including lunch.

The afternoon is free to relax or explore the town on your own.

Day 5

Transfer to Minas Gerais

This morning, your driver will take you through the Serra da Bocaina National Park to Minas Gerais, Brazil's historic mining area. En route, stop at Caxambu, a resort and spa town known for its mineral water with healing properties. Take a sip and tour the town before continuing on to the gold mining town of São João del Rey. Check into your hotel and relax. Tonight's dinner is included.

Day 6

Tiradentes and Ouro Preto

Close to São João del Rey is Tiradentes, a colonial city where the Brazilian sculptor Aleijadinho carved the Twelve Prophets statues. Visit the Congonhas to see these works of art.

Spend the night in Ouro Preto, where the majority of the gold was extracted during the gold rush. Check into the hotel, and enjoy dinner, included in your tour.

Day 7

Walking Tour of Ouro Preto & Mariana

After breakfast at the hotel, walk through Ouro Preto with your guide and learn about this UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once "the world's richest city."

Then continue to Mariana, a smaller town where you can actually visit a gold mine and see inside it. There are also handicrafts and locally-made goods for sale here.

Day 8

Return to Rio via Petropolis & the Serra do Mar

The return journey to Rio de Janeiro follows the Serra do Mar Atlantic Rainforest mountains, a very scenic ride. Stop along the way to tour Petrópolis, which was once the summer palace for the Emperor. Your driver will then drop you off at the Rio de Janeiro airport for your flight home or to your next destination in Brazil.
