Argentina Reciprocity Tax

Argentina visas are not required for travel to Argentina for North Americans staying less than three months. However, a Reciprocity Tax is charged to Australians, Canadians, and Americans upon arrival in Argentina. This tax is proportional to the tax charged to Argentines visiting North America. Payment is charged at Argentina's airports and any point of entry. Payment can be made in Argentine Pesos or in US Dollars, by cash, credit card, or traveler's check.

NOTE: As of March 21, 2011, the Argentina Reciprocity Tax will be charged according to the following rates:

Brazil Visas for Americans

Brazil visas are equired for North Americans traveling to Brazil. The processing fee for a Brazil visa is $131. Because a Brazil visa takes time to process, it's best to obtain one well in advance of your departure date. To obtain a Brazil visa, contact your nearest Brazilian embassy or consulate, or apply online.

2. What do I need to apply for a visa?

  • Your passport. Make sure that it is valid for at least six months after your arrival date in Brazil
  • A Visa Application Form. Make sure it is signed and dated by the passport holder or legal guardians. You can fill out the Visa Application Form online; just remember to print out the receipt page (with bar code) once you have completed the application.
  • One recent 2x2 passport-photo
  • A copy of your round-trip ticket or a booked itinerary showing travel to and from Brazil (confirming the purchase of the ticket, with passenger’s name, itinerary, flight number and arrival/departure dates)
  • A copy of the U.S. Alien Resident Card for foreign residents and/or a valid visa or document to return from Brazil to the US or to another country
  • For minors under 18 years of age, see “Visa for Minors
  • Proof of residency (driver's license, utility bill)
  • The Consulate may request additional information/documentation as deemed necessary

3. How much does it cost?

  • U.S. passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $131
  • Australian passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $35
  • Canadian passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $65
  • Japanese and Russian passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $50
  • Mexican passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $30
  • Nigerian passport holders must pay a processing fee of USD $40
  • All other passport holders (that require visas) must pay a processing fee of USD $20

  • An additional fee of $20.00 will be charged for any application not submitted in person by the applicant, regardless of nationality
  • Please note that cash and checks are not permitted, online US Postal Service money orders, made out to the Consulate General of Brazil

5. Visa requirements for Minors (under 18 years)

  • Your passport, valid for at least six months after your arrival date in Brazil
  • Visa Application Form. Make sure it is signed and dated by the passport holder's parents or legal guardians. You can fill out the Visa Application Form online; just remember to print out the receipt page (with bar code) once you have completed the application. This letter must be authenticated by the Brazilian Consulate, which costs an additional $45
  • One recent 2x2 passport-photo
  • Origianl birth certificate and one copy of the birth certificate
  • A notarized letter of consent signed by the parents, if the child is traveling alone
  • A notarized letter of consent signed by the non-traveling parent, if the child is traveling with one parent
  • An International Certificate of Vaccination including polio vaccination is required for all children ages 7 and under
  • The Consulate may request additional information/documentation as deemed necessary

6. How long does the visa last?

  • The Brazil visa is good for 5 years with multiple entries, as long as the visa holder adheres to the following criteria:
  • The Brazil visa must be used within 90 days from the date that it was issued
  • Tourists may only stay up to 90 days. The Brazilian Federal Police may extend the visa at their discretion, but it may not exceed 180 days per year

7. What else do I need to know before applying for a tourist visa?


  • Apply ONLY to the consulate in your jurisdication
  • Please note that cash and checks are not permitted, online US Postal Service money orders, made out to the Consulate General of Brazil
  • If you are applying for visas for a family, a single money order for the total amount is fine
  • Visas applications can be sent by mail, but must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The consulate only returns mail via the USPS. A mail service with a tracking number is recommended
  • After all documentation is received by the Consulate, tourist visa applications take at least 5 (five) working days to be processed. Longer periods may apply. The Consulate has no rush/expedite service or fees. The consulate does not issue same day visas, unless in case of a documented medical emergency
  • Anyone can pick-up the visa as long as they have the receipt

    8. Are vaccinations or shots required?


      YELLOW FEVER INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION CERTIFICATE

      A Yellow Fever Immunization Certificate is required for those who have traveled to any of the following countries within 90 days prior to arrival in Brazil: Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Gabon, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo (ex-Zaire), or Venezuela.

      The Yellow Fever Immunization Certificate is advisable, but not required, for those who are planning to traveled to any of the following regions of Brazil: Acre, Amazonas, Maranhno, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondunia, Roraima, Tocantins and the Federal District.

      An International Certificate of Vaccination including polio vaccination is required for all children ages 7 and under.

    Chile Reciprocity Fee

    Chile visas are not required for travel to Chile for most citizens staying less than three months. A Chile Entry Card (a.k.a. "Reciprocity Fee") is required for Australians, Canadians and US citizens upon arrival at Santiago's International Airport. This tax is proportional to the tax charged to Chileans visiting those countries. Payment is charged at the point of entry, and can be made in US Dollars, by cash, credit card, or traveler's check.

    Note: As of August 1, 2011, the Chilean Reciprocity Tax will be charged according to the following rates:

    Bolivia Visas

    Bolivia visas are required for travel to Bolivia for U.S. citizens. Payment can be made upon arrival at any point of entry to Bolivia, or from your nearest Bolivian consulate. The cost for a Bolivia visa, whether made in advance or upon arrival, is USD $135.00.

    A Bolivia visa is valid for five years after the date of issue, and will permit entrance to Bolivia three times per year, for a total of 90 days per year. The Bolivian immigration authorities can permit extensions only in special cases.

    To apply by mail for a Bolivia visa, requests must be sent to the Bolivia consulate office nearest you, with all required documents and a self-addressed, stamped envelope enclosed.

    Any traveler older than 1 year must also have an International Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, translated into Spanish.
