Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport, meet your guide and transfer to the city, where you will have time for a last-minute shopping. Then begin your 1-hour journey through the rural areas of Peru’s Madre de Dios Department until arriving at Puerto Nuevo, within the Infierno Community. Reach the port and board a boat and sail upwards the Tambopata River. Take this chance to test your ability to spot playful monkeys climbing through the lush canopy. A vegetarian lunch will be served onboard.

Once at the Inotawa Lodge, you can explore the facilities, lay comfortable on a hammock, or rest in your room, rustically decorated with local wood and warm colors that merge perfectly with the rainforest. Your guide will welcome you and introduce you to the activities you will do the next three days.
Your Amazon exploration starts with a hikes, where you can get familiar with the different creatures that inhabit the immense Amazon Rainforest.

La Torre Clay Lick:
This morning you will find one of the most colorful scenes on the rainforest: a clay lick, locally known as ‘colca.’ They consist of clay walls where hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets gather (especially from September to February) to feed on the clay. Some theories state that it protects them from the venomous effects of some fruits.

Head to a strategic point far enough so as not to disturb them, but at the same time close enough to provide a great view.

Tres Chimbadas Lake:
In the afternoon go to the south of the lodge to arrive at the Tres Chimbadas Lake. Board a catamaran and follow your guide’s instructions to try and spot as many animals as you can. it is possible to see birds, reptiles and mammals, including the endangered giant river otter. You can also practice catch and release fishing, with chances of fishing carnivorous piranhas.

Don Aurelio’s Farm:
Visit a local farm to see the fascinating shapes, colors, and tastes of the local fruits and herbs that are harvested here. Some of the Amazonian fruits are the sweet coconut-looking copoazu, and the Western Amazonian strawberry guava, frequently used to prepare refreshing juices. Unfortunately for the farmers but luckily to you, people are not the only ones that love these fruits! Toucanets, woodpeckers, and silver beaked tanagers fly around the plantations looking for papaya and banana.

Cocococha Lake:
This morning, venture into the area surrounding Cocococha Lake. The diversity and the minimal impact of human influence make this territory a perfect home for many endangered species, including macaws, giant river otters and black caimans.

Return to the lodge and walk the trails to admire the endemic flora, counting with towering trees that are more than one hundred years old.

Night Safari:
After dinner, take a night safari by boat to let yourself be carried away by the mystic Amazonian night sounds and gaze at the clear Southern sky and its constellations. Admire animals that can only be seen when the sun goes down, such as caimans and bats.

After breakfast, transfer back to Puerto Maldonado. Your guide will assist you at the airport so that you can board your flight to your next destination in Peru or other country in South America.

Meet your guide at Puerto Maldonado airport (PEM), who will welcome you to the Amazonian region of Peru. Pass by Inotawa’s office in Puerto Maldonado to register and do some last-minute shopping before going on a 2.30-hour journey by land and sea to arrive at the lodge.

Start off by land, traveling southwards from Puerto Maldonado to Puerto Nuevo, where you will ride a boat that takes you down Tambopata River, within the Tambopata National Reserve. This will be your first chance to see endemic animals, like turtles, egrets, herons and capybaras on the riverbanks, and colorful toucanets and macaws in the sky. A local vegetarian dish is served for lunch.

Arrive at the Inotawa, a wonderful 16-room lodge located in the La Torre area of the Tambopata Reserve. Meet your guide and the warm local staff, eager to answer any of your questions about the lifestyle in the Amazon.

Take your first trek to get familiar with the native fauna. Admire the bright colors of the flowers and the imposing hight of the trees, and keep an eye open to spot birds and other animals.

La Torre Clay Lick:
Transfer by boat to La Torre Clay Lick, a mud and clay bank which is about 13 feet tall and 66 feet wide. Parrots, macaws and parakeets gather there to inherit clay, which is essential to their diets because it protects them against the poisonous plants. Take in this natural show from a hideout strategically located to allow you to get a unobstructed views without disturbing the birds and their environment.

Tres Chimbadas Lake:
Get ready to a boat exploration of Tres Chimabadas Lake, located just a few miles to the north of Inotawa. You might find a colony of giant river otters that inhabit the region. The lake also hosts a variety of fish, including carnivorous piranhas. You can also practice catch and release fishing and see if you can catch one!

Don Aurelio’s Farm:
Visit to a traditional farm with the delicious Amazonian fruits, a variety of herbs, and medical plants very important for the inhabitants of Infierno Community. Head to the papaya and banana plantations where it is easy to spot silver beaked tanagers, oropendolas, toucanets, orioles and various woodpeckers.

Today, join a representative from from the rural La Torre Community to get to a protected area deep into the Tambopata National Reserve called La Torre, meaning ‘the tower’ in Spanish. This community has deep compromise with the environment and the jungle and understand the importance of preserving it. This is why they have decided to get involved in sustainable eco-tourism and share their home with visitors from all over the world in a responsible way.

La Torre Lakes:
There are three main lakes in this region: Montes, Pato and Lagarto. Hike the area surrounding the lakes and see the mammals, reptiles, birds, and trees each trail has to offer. Your guide will tell you about the lifestyle in the jungle and the healing properties of the plants.

After 4 or 5 hours of exploration, take a well-deserved rest in the middle of the jungle to soak up energy.
Solitaria Clay Lick:

Get to a hidden clay lick called ‘Solitaria,’ meaning ‘lonely’ in Spanish. Here, many mammals gather to inherit the clay from the walls, similar to what parakeets do at La Torre clay lick. Some of the animals you can see here include brocket deers, peccaries, and tapirs.

Cocococha Lake Trek:
Two and a half trek around the Cocococha Lake, located in the Tambopata National Reserve. This territory consists of swampland, lowlands, and hills, counting with a high level of biodiversity. Admire the typical rubber trees, Brazil nut trees, and some other ancient tall trees are part of its flora.
This 60-ha area shelters endangered macaws, black caimans and giant river otters. Follow your guide’s instructions and stay as quiet as you can to see them and be in contact with nature.

In the afternoon, visit the home of a local family to get a cultural exchange.

Night Safari:
When night falls and the sun hides, the Amazonian landscape completely changes. Board a boat to venture into the territory of the nocturnal creatures of the jungle, with a flashlight on hand to spot small frogs, bats, and caimans emerging from the waters.

After breakfast, take a moment to appreciate the vast jungle and its ecosystem before making your way back to Puerto Maldonado.

One of the guides will join you along the way and give you assistance at the airport. Take a flight to Cuzco or Lima to continue your journey through Peru, take a flight back home or continue with your South American vacation.
