Highlights |
This morning, fly from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldonado, and transfer from the airport to the port. Your guide will greet you and take you on the 4-hour motorboat ride to the lodge. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Community of Infierno and will have a boxed lunch. Arrive at the Refugio Amazonas Lodge, where the staff will greet you warmly and help you settle into your bungalow. Then enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge. At night, your guide will take you to the river to look for caiman, small alligators whose eyes reflect in the beams of flashlights. Afterwards, relax in your bungalow.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning canoe ride along a gently rolling oxbow lake, where a bounty of animals and birds live. You might spot hoatzin, caiman, horned screamers, river otters, macaws, and more. Afterwards, return to the lodge and head to the 25-meter tall canopy tower that gives you a monkey’s eye view of the Tambopata National Reserve. Here you might spot toucans, macaws, and birds of prey. Descend the tower and return to the lodge for lunch..
In the afternoon, you can visit the nearby farming community of Condenado, where farmers grow a variety of crops. Enjoy a nature walk as well, learning about how different plants suchas Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, and Para-Para are used for medicinal and other purposes..
Have dinner at the lodge, and then relax as the staff presents a nightly educational lecture about various projects going on at the lodge and the surrounding Tambopata National Reserve.
After breakfast, spend the morning visiting a parrot clay lick. A clay lick is a riverbank where parrots and other animals gather to eat the nutritious clay. The parrots descend in huge flocks, and you can watch them undisturbed from a nearby viewing point. Take a 15-minute boat ride and 60-minute walk to the clay lick, where you may see Dusky headed Parakeets, Cobalt-winged Parakeets, and other species of macaws and parrots..
Return to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest, then set out for another activity. Hike through the forest to a Brazil Nut grove, where you can see how these delicious nuts are harvested. This afternoon, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit a peccary clay lick, where wild pigs, deer, guan, and parakeets come on occasion to eat the clay..
Have dinner at the lodge and then prepare for a night walk. The evening and nighttime are when many animals are most active. Your guide can help you identify bird calls, frog bellows, and other nocturnal animal sounds.
Have breakfast and then pack your bags for the return journey to Puerto Maldonado. Say goodbye to the staff at the lodge and board the motorboat for the ride to Puerto Maldonado. Once at the port, your guide will take you to the airport for your flight to Cusco or Lima.
It is possible to extend your stay, adding on extra days and extra activities. For avid bird watchers, we highly recommend adding a couple extra days to journey deeper into the forest to the Tambopata Research Center.
