All Sao Luis Brazil Tours
The Historic Centre of São Luis, Sitio Piranhenga, lies in the center of Sao Lui which is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Maranhao. It is the only Brazilian state capital founded by France. It is known for the beautiful azulejo tile work adorning many of its buildings and as a lively hub for artists and performers. Tour the slave quarters, where Africans were bought and sold, and learn about how Sao Luis was the second largest importer of African slaves. See the Casa Grande and other parts of this historic plantation, and go walking along trails by the Bacanga River. There is also a small zoo where you can see toucans, monkeys, macaws, and armadillos.
Historic Centre of Sao Luis
Our ideal tour of Brazil would include exploring Sao Luis’ cobblestone streets, witnessing the traditional capoeira performed here and enjoying the local music. Don’t leave without visiting the nearby desert lagoons!
While exploring Sao Luis, be sure to plan some time to simply relax on the beach, especially Ponta d’Areia, São Marcos, and Calhau. Tour Sao Luis the same way that the locals get around on a jardineira, which is a lorry or buggy with benches. In June, there are folklore festivals with costumed dancers and musicians parading through the city. You also should plan a day to visit the nearby city of Alcantara, which was founded in the 16th century and is now a National Historical site. Further away but just as worthwhile are Jericoaracara, Lencois Maranhenses, and Fortaleza.
