The last 400 meters of climbing are the hard part. After the approach to the Poincenot camping site, the trail turns steep and short, climbs past moraines and ends at Laguna de los Tres, with the glacier beside it. That climb is the reason to come. The walk in is moderate. The finish is not.
It is one full day on the trail with a professional trekking guide, under Mount Fitz Roy in Los Glaciares National Park. The rest is kept light: a flight into El Calafate, a bus to El Chaltén, a night in a Patagonian-style lodge inspired by the old estancias, and the bus back the morning after the hike, with a free afternoon before you fly out.
It is a tour extension. Pair it with another Patagonia itinerary, and your Destination Consultant will fit the two together.
Fly into El Calafate, where your guide meets you and escorts you to the bus station for the ride to El Chaltén. Check in to your lodge, a Patagonian-style hostel inspired by the 20th-century estancias. Tomorrow starts early, so tonight is for sorting your boots and layers, eating well and going to bed on time.
Early start. Your trekking guide takes you from El Chaltén to the trailhead for a full day out to Laguna de los Tres. The first stretch is a hike of moderate difficulty, about two hours, to the Poincenot camping site. Then the trail changes. The last climb is short and steep, about 400 meters up, and it passes moraines before the lagoon opens up, with the glacier beside it. Take your time. The route carries on to Laguna Sucia, ringed by glaciers, then retraces your steps to Poincenot and back to El Chaltén in the late afternoon. The evening at the lodge is for sitting down.
An early bus takes you back to El Calafate. Check into your hotel, get the boots off and let your legs recover from the day before. The afternoon is free: walk through town, then eat out or at the hotel restaurant. Nothing is scheduled. After the trail, that is the right amount.
Transfer to the El Calafate airport for your flight to Buenos Aires or on to your next destination. This page is a tour extension, so what comes next depends on the itinerary it is paired with, and your Destination Consultant can line that up. If the flight allows, leave time for a last coffee in town before the transfer.
