Sample Itinerary & Cruise Routes

A boat sails on a calm river at sunset during a Brazil Amazon River Cruise, with the sun glowing orange and yellow on the horizon. Trees line the riverbank, and the sky reflects on the water’s surface.
Day 1

This afternoon, embark on the Motor Yacht Tucano in Manaus. We sail along the Rio Negro and as the vessel glides upstream we will have our first talk about Amazonian environments. By late afternoon we enter one of the world's largest river island systems, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The boat will weave along a winding channel with rainforest on both sides in a riot of brilliant vegetation. Weather permitting, we will go for a launch excursion in the gnarled and dense flooded forest known as the Igapó. Along the river bank we may see Squirrel Monkeys and we may hear the other-worldly growls of Howler Monkeys echoing through the primitive rainforest. The Amazon has one of the greatest collection of birds in the world and we are sure to see some of these brightly colored jewels perched in the treetops.

We return to the M/Y Tucano for hors d'oeuvres on the observation deck and a toast to the rainforest sunset. Following dinner we will embark in our launches in search of nocturnal creatures such as the Caiman, the Amazon's crocodilians. We may also see one of the large night birds such as a Potoo with its bulging eyes and large mouth adapted to swallow the huge Mariposa Moths.

A person stands among large trees with thick roots in a lush, dense jungle near a muddy pool—an adventure reminiscent of a Brazil Amazon River Cruise, where vines and branches evoke the wild beauty of the rainforest.
Day 2

Shortly after sunrise this morning we explore the Anavilhanas Archipelago, a reserve that includes the world’s largest system of river islands and also areas of tall dense rainforest. This island system is part of the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. Here we will see the strange environment called the Igapó, the black water flooded forest where dense forests grow right out of the dark water of the Rio Negro. Mid morning we return to the vessel for a hearty Brazilian breakfast. After some time to relax, weather permitting we will disembark at mid-morning and will go for a walk in the type of rainforest known as the Terra Firme. Here we have a good chance to see the markings, if not the animals themselves, of some of the Amazon’s great mammals like peccaries (wild pigs) or even a jaguar.

Mid-day, return to the M/Y Tucano for lunch and a siesta. After some rest, the Tucano will launch along the edges of the dense forest. While traveling, listen to the chorus of birds, howler monkeys and frogs. An option for a night safari is available.

A jaguar with a yellow-and-black spotted coat walks through dense green foliage, its mouth slightly open and tongue visible, in a tropical forest setting—an unforgettable sight on an Amazon River Cruise.
Day 3

Today, travel to the west side of the Rio Negro. Alongside a local guide, walk in the forest and explore areas rarely visited by anyone else. In the late afternoon, the Tucano will travel downstream (river depth permitting) and will enter the east bank of the Rio Negro. This small river brings travelers farther into the Amazon rainforest. At night, enjoy Caipirinha Night aboard the Tucano and perhaps samba the night away on the top deck.

Two rivers with distinctly different colored waters, one brown and one dark blue, flow side by side without mixing under a partly cloudy sky. In the distance, a Tucano Amazon River Cruise boat drifts where the rivers meet.
Day 4

Begin the day with a dawn excursion searching for wakening wildlife. Next, enjoy a full Brazilian breakfast. Then, head into the rainforest one last time. In the mid-afternoon, journey downstream towards the "Encontra das Aguas" (Meeting of the Waters). Here, the two largest rivers in the world join together. See the contrast between the dark water of the Rio Negro and the pale Amazon River.

At sunset, cruise upstream to Manaus. While passing by Manaus, marvel at the scale of one of the world's largest and most vibrant port cities. At night, enjoy a farewell dinner and prepare for an early morning departure.

Pink and white neoclassical building with ornate columns and a large, colorful dome, photographed at sunset during a South America Tour. The structure sits elevated with stone steps and railings; sunlight streams through partly cloudy skies.
Day 5

Early this morning, have one last look at the port of Manaus. Then, disembark the vessel at the riverside dock of the Hotel Tropical.

Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon 6 Nights

Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon is different from all other cruises offered in the Amazon, it is an “expedition cruise”. Our small groups explore far into the forest where we are able to see creatures that are hidden to other visitors. We explore some of the most untouched rainforest in all of the Amazon. Our expedition cruise is the only one that explores far into the world’s largest Amazon reserve: The Central Amazon Conservation Complex. This reserve is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site and encompasses tens of thousands of square miles of uninhabited wilderness. Within these trackless forests still live the creatures that have made the Amazon the object of myth and legend. Because of the exploratory nature, the small size of the groups, and especially our skilled guides, our expedition cruises enable travelers to experience the rainforest in the most detailed and authentic way possible.

Day 1

This morning, board the Motor Yacht Tucano and glide upstream on the Rio Negro. Cruise towards the most extensive river island system in the world, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. From the observation deck, marvel at the lush vegetation at the edge of the water. In the afternoon, the vessel will have gone beyond the frontier of settlement and entered a wilderness area. Both shores are covered by dense rainforest. Take the opportunity to spot pink river dolphins swimming in the water and a large collection of exotic birds. In the evening, search for more wildlife or opt for a refreshing swim in the river.

Day 4

The morning is busy with two exciting excursions! After which the Tucano will navigate along the heavily forested shore, scouting for wildlife. A visit to a local home carved out of the forest is possible (all things permitting). By the early afternoon, the Rio Jaueperi will be near. While here, marvel at the varzea forest and the extraordinary creatures that live in this unique environment. If the weather permits, embark on a night excursion to observe the nocturnal animals.

A large, round green Victoria water lily pad floats on a pond surrounded by lush foliage—just one of the natural wonders you might see on an Amazon River Cruise or an adventure with Tucano along the Brazil Amazon River.
