A Patagonia lodge extension outside El Calafate, Argentina

What happens on the second day gets decided over breakfast. The weather votes first, appetite second. Trekking, hiking, bird watching or biking, each with a guide from the lodge, and no one asks for a commitment the night before.

The base is Eolo, a Relais & Chateaux lodge in the style of a Patagonian estancia, on 3,000 acres in the La Anita Valley. It sits on the eastern side of Mount Frías, about 30 minutes from El Calafate’s airport, with the restaurant looking over Lake Argentino. Full board is included, and so are the pool, the sauna and the library.

Eolo is open from October to April. As a tour extension, it gives a few slow nights near El Calafate instead of a rush through it. A glacier tour, fishing, navigation and horseback riding can be added, booked separately and subject to availability and weather. Leaving them out is a perfectly good plan.

Example Itinerary – Fully Customizable

Day 1

Your driver meets you at the airport for the transfer to Eolo, about 30 minutes. The lodge is in the La Anita Valley, on the eastern side of Mount Frías, on 3,000 acres. It is built in the manner of the old Patagonian estancias, the sheep ranches that settled this country.

Full board is included. Meals are in the restaurant, which looks over Lake Argentino. The library, the bar with its Argentine wines, the indoor pool and the spa are all there for the evening. Nothing is scheduled today. Arrive, unpack, sit down.

Day 2

Over breakfast, meet your guide and pick the day: trekking, hiking, bird watching or biking, all on the estancia and all led by the lodge's own guides. Weather and energy usually settle it. Nobody needs to decide the night before.

Other excursions can be added, but they are booked separately: a Perito Moreno Glacier tour, a fishing trip, navigation tours and horseback riding. All of these, like the day itself, depend on availability and weather conditions.

Day 3

A van takes you back to El Calafate. From there, you have two ways to go. Spend a night at a hotel in town, or take a flight to more of Patagonia and South America. The lodge is about 30 minutes from the airport, so the last morning does not have to be rushed.
