Sample Itinerary

Nighttime view of a historic colonial building in Argentina, with arched walkways and a wooden balcony, warmly lit with lamps. A crowd gathers outside under the deep blue sky—an authentic scene from the Land of Contrast.
Day 1

Arrive in Salta today. If you arrive at the airport, your guide will be waiting there to meet you and take you to your hotel in the downtown area of Salta. This afternoon, enjoy a 3-hour city tour of Salta, an important colonial city in northwestern Argentina. The city tour includes the vista point from Cerro San Bernardo Hill, the Salta Cathedral, the 18th-century Cabildo, the Plaza 9 de Julio, the Church of San Francisco, the Town Hall, the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (Archaeology Museum of the High Mountains), and the local handicrafts market.

A large metal railway bridge curves over a dry, mountainous landscape under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds, reminiscent of the iconic Train to the Clouds railway journey.
Day 2

Today, travel by bus from the city of Salta, along RN 51 until you reach El Alfarcito. Upon arrival, enjoy a hearty breakfast, prepared with fresh local ingredients and learn about the meaningful work of the Alfarcito Foundation. Then, continue by bus, through Quebrada de las Cuevas and the Muñano plain until you reach San Antonio de los Cobres, where you will board the famous Train to the Clouds and travel to the Polvorilla Viaduct! The train reaches as high as 4220 meters (13,850 ft), making it one of the tallest trains in the world. The ride will include lunch, snacks, folklore dances, and traditional music. After visiting La Polvorilla Viaduct for 30 minutes, return to San Antonio de los Cobres via train. Then board a bus headed back to Salta with one final stop at the small village, Santa Rosa de Tastil.

Colorful, jagged mountains in Argentina’s Land of Contrast reveal layers of red, pink, white, and beige rock formations under a clear blue sky, creating a striking and vibrant landscape.
Day 3

After breakfast, take a full-day excursion to the Quebrada de Huamahuaca, a pre-Colombian town built among richly-colored rocks of gorgeous colors. The highlight is the Hill of Seven Colors. Huamahuaca Canyon is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to many indigenous villages, pre-Colombian fortresses, and natural beauty.

A commercial airplane flies above the ocean with a vibrant sunset sky in the background, reminiscent of the colorful views seen on a Colombia Train Tour from Bogota to Zipaquira, with shades of orange, yellow, and blue scattered among the clouds.
Day 4

This morning, have breakfast at the hotel and then meet your driver for the transfer to the Salta airport. From here, you can fly to Buenos Aires and then to your onward destination. If you want to spend more time exploring Argentina, we highly recommend the extended version of this tour, which includes the Tucuman-Buenos Aires train.
