Day 2

San Pedro Guided Walk
If you want to grasp a deep understanding of the town of San Pedro and its history, seeing beyond its restaurants and shops, this tour is for you.

Visit the old downtow, the Father LePaige Archaeological Museum that features ancient relics from the Lickantantai people, the town square, the church, the craft market, the main street, and the house where Pedro de Valdivia used to live.

Foot hike: 1.24 miles
Duration: 2 hours approx

Atacama History
This excursion is a fascinating trip through time, since it takes you to an Atacama fortress that dates back to 1.000 AD: the Quitor of Pukara.

From Awasi Atacama, board a vehicle and drive 2 mi from San Pedro until arriving at Ayllu of Quitor. As you ascend the ruins, you’ll be able to appreciate a panoramic view of the Andes, the river and the cultivation. Afterward, visit Tulor, located around 6 mi from San Pedro. At this archaeological site dating back to 800 BC, you will find an excavation site with original Atacamenian homes reconstructed by archaeologists.

To complete this excursion to the past, you can visit Father LePaige Archaeological Museum at Atacama, an absolute must to understand why San Pedro is considered Chile’s archaeological capital.

Vehicle ride: 18.6 miles (round trip)
Foot hike: 4.3 miles approx
Duration: 3 hours approx

Four flamingos with pink and black wings run and prepare to take flight from a shallow, reflective lake in the Atacama Desert, with a mountain landscape in the background. One more flamingo stands in the distance near Awasi Atacama, a luxury hotel.
Day 3

Depart from Awasi towards the south region. After about 24 miles, arrive in Toconao, an ancient village that features an intriguing architecture because of its volcanic-stone constructions. Visit its church and the historic bell tower. Depending on the day of the visit, a handicrafts fair will take place at the square.

Afterwards, head to Chaxa pond, a National Reserve located at the Atacama Salt Flat. This pond is surrounded by salt crusts and gypsum produced by the evaporation of salty ground water. The native fauna consists of flamingos and birds, and these elegant creatures add a distinctive charm to the scenery, photographed by tourists from all over the world. Contemplate the Domeyko, the Salt, and the Andes Mountain Chain, a landscape that will make you feel the vastness of the desert.

Vehicle ride: 67 miles (round trip)
Duration: 4 hours approx.

Jagged, reddish-brown mountains under a purple sky at dusk evoke the tranquil beauty of Awasi Atacama, with a full moon rising above distant peaks and a flat, shadowed plain in the foreground.
Day 4

After this journey of exploration in the desert, enjoy one last breakfast at Awasi Atacama and transfer to Calama to fly to another destination in Chile or another South American country.

It is also possible to stay at Awasi Atacama for a whole week and visit more places, such as Tambillo, the Moon Valley, Zapar, and Puritama Hot Spring.
