4 Star Chile – Gran Hotel Gervasoni in Valparaiso
Updated: April 10, 2018
The Gran Hotel Gervasoni offers travelers the opportunity to explore Valparaiso in an intimate fashion. This 4-star boutique hotel features a prime location in the historic district known as Cerro Concepcion — the famous hillside dotted with colorful dwellings that overlook the bay. The neighborhood was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Many shops and cafes are within walking distance of the Paseo Gervasoni, offering guests a variety of dining options in addition to those available at the hotel. Historic Gervasoni The building was originally constructed by European immigrants in 1870. The 11,000 square foot structure underwent a three-year restoration when it was converted into a hotel. All 15 suites enjoy a view of the bay, as does the breakfast room where complimentary morning meals offer a picturesque start to the day. An outdoor terrace also provides ideal views of the bay. There is space to barbecue and enjoy the hot tub during nice weather, and the terrace can be covered and climate controlled for use during winter. Gervasoni, Valparaiso, and Wine! Wine is very important to this region of Chile, known as the ‘Centro’ agriculturally. From Valparaiso, grape aficionados can branch out in several directions, including the famous ‘Wine Highway’ of nearby Casablanca. The Casablanca Valley features 10,000 acres of vines that benefit from the cool breezes of the Pacific Ocean, just 20 miles to the west. Often compared to the Sonoma Coast in California, the Casablanca region is known for producing Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Wine is also very important to the hotel. In fact, the connection is so strong that the restaurant at the Gervasoni is simply called The Wine Restaurant. Of course, it helps that the hotel also features a legendary wine cellar in the basement, one that includes nearly 200 labels from seven countries. The Restaurante Di Vino (Wine Restaurant) offers a blend of local cuisine and international flavors in a beautiful setting. Terrace seating is available, allowing for an ideal fusion of the best food, drink, and views in town. Houses of Pablo Neruda This region of central Chile is recognized for more than just wine. It is also home to the world-famous poet Pablo Neruda, who left behind three beautiful homes after his death in 1973. Each house is now available for public viewings at a cost of approximately $7 (USD). Each year, thousands of loyal fans make the triangle-shaped journey from Santiago to Valparaiso and Isla Negra on the coast in order to walk in his footsteps. His Valparaiso home, La Sebastiana, is a short five-minute drive from the Gervasoni and includes an adjacent museum. The first house, La Chascona, is located in the Bellavista neighborhood of Santiago, making it a natural starting point for tourists entering the country via the capital city. The third house is in Isla Negra, which is about an hour and a half south of Valparaiso by car, also situated along the coast. Ready to book a Chilean holiday including the Gervasoni in Valparaiso?
