The Galápagos Islands are part of Ecuador, so the currency is the US dollar — but there are two important fees to budget for in cash, and ATMs are limited once you’re on the islands. Here’s what to know before you go.
Two mandatory fees usually aren’t included in tour prices, and both are payable in US dollars cash:
Bring crisp, undamaged bills, as worn notes are sometimes rejected at the counters, and check the current amounts before you travel, as the fees have risen in recent years.
Because everything has to be shipped from the mainland, prices in the Galápagos are higher than on the inexpensive Ecuadorian mainland — expect to pay roughly what you would on a cruise elsewhere in the world. ATMs exist only in the two main towns (Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal) and can run out of cash, and many smaller vendors don’t take cards — so bring enough US dollars with you, including small bills.
Tipping is customary, broadly to US standards, and usually given in cash. On a cruise it’s typical to tip the crew and your naturalist guide at the end of the trip — your operator will suggest a per-day guideline.
