The Essential Traveler’s Packing List

Paraguay is warm year-round, with a subtropical-to-tropical climate, so light, breathable clothing is your foundation. Remember that seasons run opposite to the Northern Hemisphere: summer (December to February) is hot and humid, occasionally topping 40°C, while the June-to-August winter is mild and pleasant. Pack for heat, but keep a light layer for cooler evenings and for the cold snaps that can sweep up from the south.

Asunción & the Cities: Lightweight, loose clothing, a sun hat, and sunglasses will keep you comfortable, plus a light jacket for air-conditioned interiors and cooler nights. Comfortable walking shoes are ideal for exploring the capital.

The Chaco & Countryside: For the wild Chaco or the Jesuit mission country, bring long lightweight sleeves and trousers, closed shoes, strong insect repellent, and rain gear for the wet season. A refillable water bottle is essential in the heat.

Regardless of when you visit, here are the essentials worth having in your bag for Paraguay.

  • Your passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
  • A photocopy (or phone photo) of your passport, kept separately from the original
  • Any tourist visa paperwork you need (see the entry requirements above)
  • A second form of identification, such as a driver’s license
  • Cash for meals, markets, and tips — budget roughly what these items would cost back home
  • A money belt and/or decoy wallet
  • A power adapter for Paraguay’s Type C plug (220V), plus a portable charger
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for the strong subtropical sun
  • DEET insect repellent, especially for the Chaco and rural areas
  • A reusable water bottle and any personal medications in their original packaging
  • A camera with spare memory and batteries to capture it all
  • Your smartphone, set to airplane mode or a local eSIM to avoid roaming charges
