Olinda’s 17th and 18th-century era buildings, cobblestone streets, belvederes, artists studios, and colonial charm have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the Portuguese again, today Olinda is one of Brazil’s best-preserved colonial cities. On a tour of Olinda, walk down the Rua do Amparo, past restaurants, museums, hotels, and art studios, and enjoy a serenade of live music on weekends. There are also forró and maracatú clubs with traditional music. We recommend taking a catamaran tour of the neighboring city of Recife’s coastline. After the cruise, visit an atelier in Olinda, which has a collection of pottery and other artwork. For a taste of Brazil beaches, take a full-day guided tour of Pernambuco’s most beautiful beaches, including Igarrasu and Itamaraca. Then cross over to the Coroa do Aviao Island. You may want to go swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, or take a boat ride through these calm, warm waters.
