With normal precautions it is safe to visit all the main attractions in Rio and have a very enjoyable trip this includes all the highlights such as the statue of Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and the famous beaches. At night, it is best to take pre-booked taxis and to stay off the beaches. Rio de Janeiro gets some bad press but it is important to distinguish between wealthy tourist areas such as Copacabana and Ipanema and the poor favelas or shantytowns that do indeed have high crime levels. We do not recommend visiting the favelas and in any case, it is questionable why one would want to go and gawp at people living in poor conditions.
Yes! Rio de Janeiro is an absolute must-see destination on any tour of Brazil and South America as a whole. The city has one of the most beautiful settings in the world with fantastic beaches backed by stunning mountain peaks. This, combined with the tropical climate, relaxed culture and friendly people makes Rio an excellent place to visit.
If you want a party, visit Rio de Janeiro at New Year or carnival which takes place in February or March each year. Otherwise, any month is a good month to visit Rio really. The warmest months are from December to March, and these are also the wetter months. June to August are drier and cooler though never even close to being cold. The months between these two periods are some of our favorite times to visit Rio as youll likely have mostly dry weather and moderate temperatures.
