Easter Island Tours

20+ Years Designing Chile Tours

Easter Island tours are ideal for travelers drawn to ancient history, remote landscapes, and Polynesian culture. Also known as Rapa Nui, this isolated island in the Pacific Ocean is one of the most fascinating destinations in South America and a memorable highlight of any Chile tour. Visitors are captivated by the island’s mysterious moai statues, ceremonial ahu platforms, volcanic craters, and dramatic coastal scenery.

Discover Rapa Nui on a Custom Easter Island Tour: An Easter Island vacation offers a wide range of experiences, from guided archaeological tours and cultural encounters to outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and cycling across the island. Travelers may also enjoy boat excursions around the offshore islets of Rapa Nui or a full-day visit to Anakena Beach, where several moai stand along a white-sand shoreline. Easter Island tours can be fully customized on their own or combined with other destinations in Chile, or as part of a broader itinerary linking Chile and Peru, including a visit to Machu Picchu.

Popular Easter Island Tours & Travel Packages

Easter Island works as a 3–4 night extension from Santiago — LATAM’s roughly 5.5-hour flight is the only way in — and our four island programs start at $1,676 per person, from eco-lodge stays to the full Santiago-and-Rapa-Nui route. Flight schedules and island hotels are limited, so we book this segment first and build the rest of your Chile tour around it.

Plan Your Chile Trip

The Moai & Sacred Sites of Rapa Nui

The island’s open-air museum rewards slow exploration: the quarry at Rano Raraku, where nearly 400 moai still lie mid-carving in the volcano’s slope; Ahu Tongariki, the iconic line of fifteen statues facing the sunrise; the ceremonial village of Orongo, perched between a crater lake and thousand-foot sea cliffs; and Anakena Beach, where moai stand over white coral sand. Rapa Nui National Park protects the sites, and most require entry with an accredited local guide — ours bring the archaeology and the living Rapa Nui culture together.

Planning Your Easter Island Visit

Three to four nights is the right length for the island’s key sites at an unhurried pace, with time left for horseback riding, a boat trip past the offshore islets, or simply the South Pacific from a hammock. The national park ticket covers your stay and key sites, and visiting hours and guide requirements are managed to protect them — logistics we arrange in advance. Time your trip for February and you’ll catch Tapati, the island’s two-week cultural festival of music, dance, and wildly competitive traditional sports.

Combining Easter Island with Chile & Peru

Because every flight routes through Santiago, Easter Island slots naturally into a broader journey: pair it with the Atacama Desert for a desert-and-Pacific arc, add Patagonia for the full sweep of Chile, or continue north on a Chile & Peru itinerary that sets Rapa Nui’s moai alongside Machu Picchu — two of the world’s great archaeological icons in one trip.

Easter Island Travel FAQs

Easter Island is a year-round destination, much like the rest of Chile. From January to March, the island experiences warmer and slightly wetter conditions, with average daytime highs around 27C (81F). Many travelers visit between June and September, when temperatures are cooleraveraging around 21C (70F)and rainfall is lower. The Tapati Rapa Nui cultural festival takes place each February and offers a unique experience, though travel during this period should be booked well in advance.

Yes, Easter Island is considered a very safe destination for travelers. As part of Chile, the island benefits from good infrastructure and a welcoming local community. Standard travel precautions are generally sufficient, and visitors often comment on the islands relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Flights are typically the largest expense when visiting Easter Island. The island is approximately a five-hour flight from Santiago, Chile, or from Tahiti, and airfare can vary widely depending on season and availability. As a general guideline, travelers should budget around US$500 or more for round-trip flights from Santiago. There is also an entrance fee to Rapa Nui National Park, payable on arrival, which is currently around US$80 and subject to change.

We generally recommend spending three to four nights on Easter Island. This allows enough time to explore the islands main highlights, including the moai statues, Orongo ceremonial village, volcanic landscapes, and coastal scenery. With this length of stay, travelers can enjoy guided tours at a comfortable pace while still having time for independent exploration.

By air only: LATAM operates the roughly 5.5-hour flight from Santiago to Mataveri — the world’s most remote commercial airport. Schedules are limited and seats fill early in high season, which is why we book the island segment of your itinerary first and fit the mainland around it.

Four anchor any visit: Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where the moai were carved and hundreds remain; Ahu Tongariki, the restored line of fifteen statues at sunrise; Orongo, the birdman-cult ceremonial village on the crater rim; and Anakena, the white-sand beach watched over by moai. A good guide — required at most park sites — turns the stones into a story.

For most sites within Rapa Nui National Park, yes — access rules require visiting with an accredited local guide, and the park ticket is checked at major sites. Practically, this is a gift: Rapa Nui guides carry the island’s archaeology and living culture in a way no signboard can. All of it is pre-arranged on our itineraries.

Tapati Rapa Nui, held over two weeks each February, is the island’s biggest cultural celebration — music, dance, body painting, carving, and fiercely contested traditional sports like the haka pei toboggan run down a volcanic slope. It is a spectacular time to visit, but flights and hotels sell out well ahead, so plan early.
