Packing List

Uruguay is a mild, temperate country, so packing is refreshingly simple compared with its Andean neighbors — but remember the seasons are flipped from the Northern Hemisphere. December to February is warm, sunny summer and peak beach season along Punta del Este and José Ignacio, while June to August is cool and damp. Pack for the season and keep a layer handy for the coastal breeze.

Montevideo & the Coast: In summer, bring lightweight clothing, swimwear, a sun hat, and sunglasses for the beaches, plus a light jacket for evenings when the Atlantic wind picks up. Uruguayans dress smart-casual, so pack one nicer outfit for a night out or a fine-dining parrilla. Comfortable shoes are ideal for strolling Montevideo’s rambla and old town.

Winter & the Countryside: If you visit in the cooler months or head inland to an estancia, pack warm layers, a sweater, and a waterproof jacket, as it can be grey and wet. Sturdy shoes are useful for ranch stays and rural walks.

Regardless of when you visit, here are the essentials worth having in your bag for Uruguay.

  • Your passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
  • A photocopy (or phone photo) of your passport, kept separately from the original
  • Any tourist visa paperwork you need (see the entry requirements above)
  • A second form of identification, such as a driver’s license
  • Cash for meals, markets, and tips — budget roughly what these items would cost back home
  • A money belt and/or decoy wallet
  • A power adapter for Uruguay’s Type C, F, and L plugs (220V), plus a portable charger
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sunny days on the coast
  • A reusable water bottle and any personal medications in their original packaging
  • A camera with spare memory and batteries to capture it all
  • Your smartphone, set to airplane mode or a local eSIM to avoid roaming charges
