A grand white building with a large golden dome, columns at the entrance, and a national emblem above the doorway, framed by tall palm trees—a striking landmark often featured in Venezuela travel guides.

Things to do in Venezuela

Spanish is the official language of Venezuela, spoken with a warm, fast, musical Caribbean accent. As elsewhere in the region, a few words of Spanish will carry you a long way and earn warm smiles.

Venezuelan Spanish

Venezuelan Spanish has the relaxed, rapid feel of the Caribbean: speakers often soften or drop the “s” at the ends of words, so ¿Cómo estás? can sound like “¿Cómo etá?” It’s also full of friendly slang — chévere (cool, great), pana (buddy), chamo / chama (dude / girl) and épale (hey!) come up constantly. Beyond Spanish, around 40 Indigenous languages survive, the most widely spoken being Wayuu in the northwest near the Colombian border.

English is spoken in some hotels and tourist spots, and all of our guides are English-speaking, with other languages available on request.

A Few Phrases to Pack

A “Spanish for Travelers” class, Rosetta Stone, or a free app like Duolingo makes the basics easy to pick up. Start with these:

  • Hola — Hello
  • Por favor — Please
  • Gracias — Thank you
  • De nada — You’re welcome
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? — How much is it?
  • ¿Dónde está el baño? — Where is the bathroom?

Thinking about Venezuela? Conditions there change quickly, so the best first step is simply to talk to our travel experts about what’s currently possible.
