Spanish is the official language of Venezuela, spoken with a warm, fast, musical Caribbean accent. As elsewhere in the region, a few words of Spanish will carry you a long way and earn warm smiles.
Venezuelan Spanish has the relaxed, rapid feel of the Caribbean: speakers often soften or drop the “s” at the ends of words, so ¿Cómo estás? can sound like “¿Cómo etá?” It’s also full of friendly slang — chévere (cool, great), pana (buddy), chamo / chama (dude / girl) and épale (hey!) come up constantly. Beyond Spanish, around 40 Indigenous languages survive, the most widely spoken being Wayuu in the northwest near the Colombian border.
English is spoken in some hotels and tourist spots, and all of our guides are English-speaking, with other languages available on request.
