The Guianas are three distinct territories — Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana — and, crucially, each uses a different currency. Here’s what to carry for each, plus the practical basics.
Check current exchange rates before you travel (xe.com is handy), and bring some US dollars (and euros for French Guiana) as a reliable backup.
In the main cities — Georgetown (Guyana), Paramaribo (Suriname), and Cayenne (French Guiana) — you’ll find ATMs, and hotels and larger establishments usually accept credit cards. Away from the cities, in the rainforest interior, you’ll need cash, as cards and ATMs are scarce or non-existent. Carry enough for the remote legs of your trip.
On a tour arranged by SouthAmerica.travel, most meals and activities are included, so there aren’t many extra costs to settle locally. The main things to budget cash for are tips and any shopping. Bear in mind that French Guiana is significantly pricier than Guyana and Suriname.
Tipping is modest and appreciated — around 10% in restaurants where service isn’t included, and a few US dollars per day for guides and drivers.
