A large, ornate wooden colonial-style building with arched windows and decorative trim stands beside an old clock tower and palm trees under a bright blue sky—a perfect scene to welcome travelers arriving on flights to Guianas.

What to Pack

The Guianas — Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana — share a hot, humid, tropical climate, so loose-fitting, lightweight, breathable clothing is the foundation of your packing list. Much of a trip here is spent in rainforest and along rivers, so plan for heat, sun, rain, and plenty of insects.

Pack long lightweight sleeves and trousers for the evenings and jungle, quick-dry shirts, a rain jacket or poncho, and sturdy closed footwear for muddy trails, plus sandals for around the lodge. Sun protection and strong insect repellent are essential, and a flashlight or headlamp is invaluable for the many places with limited electricity.

Here are the essentials worth having in your bag for the Guianas.

  • Your passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, plus a photocopy
  • Any tourist visa or e-visa paperwork you need (see the entry requirements above)
  • Cash — ATMs and card acceptance are limited outside the capitals
  • DEET insect repellent, high-SPF sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is required for entry
  • A rain jacket or poncho and quick-dry clothing
  • Sturdy closed walking shoes, plus sandals for the lodge
  • A flashlight or headlamp and a small first-aid kit
  • A dry bag to protect your phone, camera, and documents from humidity
  • Any personal medications, including anti-malarials if advised for your route
