The two main languages in South America are Spanish and Portuguese. Spanish is the main language in all countries except Brazil which speaks Portuguese and in the Guianas. There are also a number of indigenous languages spoken, such as Aymara and Quechua in Peru and Bolivia.
English is spoken by most hotel staff and those who work in international tourism.
