20+ Years Designing Peru Tours

The most iconic Machu Picchu hiking tours follow ancient pathways through the Andes, combining dramatic mountain scenery with rich Incan history. Popular routes include the Classic Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, and Choquequirao Trek, each offering a distinct way to experience the landscapes and culture surrounding Machu Picchu.

Hiking to Machu Picchu: Inca Trail & Trekking Alternatives

Hiking to Machu Picchu is one of the most rewarding ways to reach the famed Inca citadel and is a highlight for many travelers visiting Peru. Machu Picchu hiking tours range from challenging multi-day treks with camping or lodge stays to shorter day hikes for those with limited time. Travelers who prefer not to hike can still reach Machu Picchu comfortably by scenic train. Every hiking itinerary can be fully customized to match your fitness level, pace, and travel schedule.

Machu Picchu Hiking Tours FAQs

The trail is open year round except for February when it is closed for maintenance. The dry season is the best time to hike the Inca Trail, May-Oct. January and March can be quite wet and you may be best avoiding these months.

If you want a classic trek, the Inca Trail. To see local life, the Lares Trek. For a more demanding trek, the Salkantay. For an off the beaten track destination and challenging walking, do the Choquequirao trek. If you want to trek but like comfort, the Salkantay Lodge to Lodge trek is for you.

The shortest option is the two day Inca Trail (which in fact only involves one day of trekking), and there is no camping needed on this. The Classic Inca Trail is four days, there are several other multi-day treks to choose from too.
