You must visit Colonia del Sacramento on your tour of Uruguay. Colonia Del Sacramento is a whimsical, romantic colonial-era town on a peninsula protruding into the Rio de la Plata. It is a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires. The town of Colonia is very walkable, and you can take a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in just about an hour. There’s a network of small museums as well, including a Portuguese Museum, a Spanish Museum, a tile museum, and more. All of these museums can be visited during or after your Colonia del Sacramento tour, and there is a minimal fee to visit any of the museums. Plus, there is a lovely boardwalk, where you can walk along the riverside and, on clear days, see all the way to Buenos Aires. Make sure to spend some free time here for lunch or dinner, since there are several great sidewalk cafes.
