There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Uruguay. Uruguay UNESCO tours take you to them both: Colonia del Sacramento and Fray Bentos. Colonia del Sacramento is a beautiful town on the Rio de la Plata, an hour by boat from Buenos Aires in Argentina. Rule of Colonia regularly switched between Portugal and Spain. A UNESCO tour of Colonia is best done on foot, giving time to appreciate the colonial architecture at a leisurely pace. In contrast, Fray Bentos is an industrial heritage site – the Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay was a meatpacking plant from where products were exported to Europe. There was a city within a city here, with small brick houses and facilities such as hospitals and schools. A visit here gives a fascination glimpse into Uruguay’s industrial history.
