There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Uruguay. Uruguay UNESCO tours take you to them both: Colonia del Sacramento and Fray Bentos. Colonia del Sacramento is a beautiful town on the Rio de la Plata, an hour by boat from Buenos Aires in Argentina. Rule of Colonia regularly switched between Portugal and Spain. The historic part of the town was mostly constructed by the Portuguese and includes cobblestone streets and a number of notable buildings. A UNESCO tour of Colonia is best done on foot, giving time to appreciate the colonial architecture at a leisurely pace. In contrast, Fray Bentos is an industrial heritage site – the Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay was a meatpacking plant from where products were exported to Europe. There was a city within a city here, with small brick houses and facilities such as hospitals and schools. A visit here gives a fascination glimpse into Uruguay’s industrial history.
