Jesuit Missions of Cordoba

20+ Years Planning Trips Through Córdoba

The listing here is theJesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba: one city block in Córdoba, and five estates in the countryside that worked the land around it. UNESCO inscribed it as a single property in 2000. What survives is not only churches. It is the physical record of the religious, social and economic experiment the Society of Jesus ran out of this block for over 150 years.

That is the reason to give Córdoba two days instead of flying over it. The Block you walk. The five estancias are spread across 220 km of sierra country and need a car and a route, which is the planning question this page answers. We build Córdoba into a tailor-madeArgentina itinerary alongside the country’s otherWorld Heritage sites.

Routes We Attach Córdoba To

Argentina, Land of Contrast

Córdoba is not on it. This is the full itinerary a Córdoba leg bolts onto: Buenos Aires, both sides of Iguazú, Salta and Cafayate, then Mendoza.

10 days

Wonders of Northern Argentina

Seven days of the northwest, and no Córdoba. It ends in Tucumán rather than looping back to Salta, which points you south toward Córdoba.

7 days

The Northern Express: Salta, Cafayate & Purmamarca

No Córdoba on this one. Salinas Grandes, two nights in Purmamarca under the Hill of Seven Colors, and Cafayate in the other direction. Salta out, Salta back.

6 days

Journey to the Boundaries of Time

The other central-Argentina World Heritage ground, not this one: Talampaya and Ischigualasto out of La Rioja. Canyon and desert, not Baroque, and no Córdoba.

5 days

Salta to Cafayate Wine Route

Wine instead: five days of Torrontés in the Calchaquí valleys by way of Cachi and Colomé. Córdoba is not on it. It is an extension, so it and a Córdoba leg sit in one trip.

5 days

The Block, and What Is Inside It

One square block in the middle of Córdoba city, theManzana Jesuítica. Inside it stand the university, the church and residence of the Society of Jesus, and the college.

This was the headquarters of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay, which the Society ran from 1604 until Spain expelled them in 1767. Over 150 years of administration happened here. The farming and the money happened out on the five estancias.

The buildings are Baroque: the church, the old university rooms, the priests’ residence. Walk them and the real subject becomes clear, which is European design executed by local hands in local materials. It is a short walk, and the walking is the small part of the plan. The driving is the rest. OurCórdoba extension runs the Block and three of the estancias together, because UNESCOlisted them as one property.

The Five Estancias

Five estates, all listed, none of them next to each other.Alta Gracia at 36 km from the Block,Caroya at 44,Jesús María at 48,Santa Catalina at 70, andLa Candelaria at 220.

They were not country houses. Each held a church or chapel, a residence for the priests, living quarters, workshops and mills, the hydraulic works that made the land pay (weirs, irrigation ditches, canals), and the grazing land around all of it. These were the Block’s supporting estancias, which is the part most visitors miss.

Four of the five sit within a comfortable radius of the city. La Candelaria, at 220 km, is a decision rather than an afternoon. The lavender out in that country is the other argument for going slowly. OurCórdoba extension takes in Alta Gracia, Jesús María and Santa Catalina; tell us which ones matter and wewrite the route.

Fitting Córdoba into an Argentina Trip, and When to Go

Córdoba sits between Buenos Aires and the northwest, which makes it easy to add and easy to skip: most itineraries fly Buenos Aires to Salta over the top of it. It pairs cleanly withSalta and Cafayate and with the colored valleys of Jujuy, and any of our northwest packages can be rebuilt to include it.

Two or three nights is the honest number. One for the Block, one or two for the estancias and the driving between them. Less than that and you have seen a church.

On timing, spring and autumn are the comfortable windows in these hills. Summer afternoons are hot, and January is when Argentines take their own holidays in the sierras, so rooms go early. Thebest time to visit page has the country-wide version.

The Block and the Five Estancias

Six listed sites: one city block and five estates, the nearest 36 km out and the farthest 220. Each estate held a church, a residence, living quarters, workshops and mills, hydraulic works and grazing land.

1.

Córdoba’s Jesuit Block

The start of any route out here. The university, the church and residence of the Society of Jesus, and the college stand together on one square in the center of Córdoba, and you reach them on foot. This was the administrative core of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay.

2.

Alta Gracia (36 km)

The closest of the five at 36 km from the Block, which makes it the obvious first stop and the one that works if you have a single morning. If you only get to one estancia, it is usually this one, and it is on our Córdoba extension.

3.

Caroya (44 km)

44 km from the Block, and the first half of a natural pair. Caroya and Jesús María are the two closest together on the list, so they belong in the same run out of the city. Doing one and skipping the other costs you the drive twice over.

4.

Jesús María (48 km)

48 km out, and the companion to Caroya. It is on our Córdoba extension with Santa Catalina and Alta Gracia, which is the shortest sensible version of the estancias: three of the five in one loop, without the long run south.

Explore Jesús María (48 km) tours

5.

Santa Catalina (70 km)

70 km out, the farthest of the four within comfortable reach of the city and the deepest into the sierras. Distance is the whole difference here: this one wants a morning rather than an hour, and the drive is part of what you came for.

6.

La Candelaria (220 km)

220 km from the Block, six times Alta Gracia’s distance, and a different kind of undertaking. Plan it as its own overnight rather than a return run from the city. On a two-day Córdoba stop it is the one we would leave out.

One city block and five estates scattered across a province do not organize themselves. The questions that decide whether Córdoba earns your two days are practical: which estancias to drive to and in what order, whether La Candelaria is worth an overnight, where Córdoba falls in your flight plan between Buenos Aires and Salta. We have designed custom South America itineraries since 1999. You get a consultant who has routed this and a written day-by-day you can argue with. We design the trip; we do not run the buses.

Questions We Get About the Jesuit Block and Estancias

One city block in the center of Córdoba holding the university, the church and residence of the Society of Jesus, and the college. It was the administrative core of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay, and it is half of the UNESCO property. The five estancias in the countryside are the other half.

UNESCO inscribed the Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba in 2000 as one cultural property. Both halves are listed because neither explains itself alone: an urban university and college, and five rural estates with the churches, workshops, mills and water works that kept them running. Córdoba is where that system was administered.

Five, all in the countryside around the city. Alta Gracia is 36 km from the Block, Caroya 44 km, Jesús María 48 km, Santa Catalina 70 km and La Candelaria 220 km. Four sit within a comfortable radius; La Candelaria is the outlier and wants its own night.

Two or three nights. One covers the Block, which is walkable from a city hotel. One or two more covers the estancias and the driving between them, which is where the time goes. With one night, do the Block and one estancia and skip the rest.

The Block, yes. The estancias, not practically. The Block sits in the middle of Córdoba and you reach it on foot. The five estates lie in more than one direction outside the city, the nearest 36 km out, so we plan them with a car and a driver-guide, which also settles the order.

No. Two separate UNESCO listings, 1,200 km apart. This one is the Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba, a university and five working estates in central Argentina. The other is the Guaraní mission ruins in Misiones, the best preserved beingSan Ignacio Miní. Both belonged to the same Jesuit Province of Paraguay and ended with the expulsion in 1767.

Spring and autumn. September to November and March to May are mild in the sierras and kind to the driving days. Summer afternoons are hot. Ourweather page has the detail.
